antlerless elk

I just put in for the antlerless elk hunt (current creek region). I am pretty excited as this will be my first elk hunt if I draw out. Earlier this year I picked up a Ruger M77 30.06 and topped it with a Bushnell Elite 3200. My next step is to work up some loads for the gun and start shooting. I plan on using 180 grain bullets pushing them out at about 2900fps. This is my set-up, now for my question. I bowhunt deer in that same region and have run into elk fairly close to the reservoir (in the quakies). I am wondering if I would be better off moving up to the higher elevations for the October hunt. Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance,

Champset

Sorry, I guess I was a little vague. I am applying for the Wasatch Mountains-Current Creek Unit 17 #565 located in Utah.

p.s. Thanks for responding to my post.

for the cow hunt in that area in October,, pick a hill side and wait for the shooting to kick em around if your draw is during general elk hunt ,,, if it's after the general season your boundaries i believe go several miles East of there,,, if so those elk are always in the juniper stands between the currant creek turn off and Fruitland... hope this helps, good luck on the draw

Take that "06" with some 150's bust it in the head or the neck close to a road or where ya can drive to it load it up and head for the cooler, the only way to hunt cows, after all it's the meat your after and if this your first one beleive me the work starts when they hit the ground... Good Luck!

Thanks for the info. I appreciate your tips. I know the process of hauling out an animal. I don't mind hunting back in a ways. I have plenty of help to quarter and pack the meat out. Thanks again.

LAST EDITED ON May-31-04 AT 11:22AM (MST)[p]champset, one other option to look at is taking your cow with your bow during the deer hunt. Yep that is right. I just found out about this this year. I had to ask, then I read the cow elk section over several times. As long as you are hunting in the same area that your cow tag is in you can take it in any general season, that you have a tag for. Thats archery, muzzleloader or rifle.
Just a thought.

BlackTimber,

That is interesting. I will have to look into that. One problem that I have is getting the elk off the mountain before it spoils. It is so hot during the August hunt that I worry about the possibility of losing some meat.

littlebuck,

Nice catch. I gave the wrong info. I push the 150 grain bullets at 2900 fps. The 180 grain are out at about 2700 fps.

champset and littlebuck-
yep-you guys are right...180's at 2900 is .300 Win Mag land. :)
