one week to go

It one week until our trip to Montana starts. WE have had lots of help from the forum (mule deer). Thanks for the input thus far. We are hunting near Glasgow. Some will be private land north of Glasgow, but also we have been told of good BLM land south called the badlands(?). I have maps and photos of large tracts west of the fort peck reservior. Any other suggestions or advice? The plan is to spend the first day scouting and learning how to get around the area and start hunting the next. This is our first trip out west and we are very excited.

The Breaks down south are nice and all but don't expect to have them to yourself. I would tell you take a look at some of the lands up north as well especially since you are going to be hunting up that way anyway. There are a few unique opportunities there and you may be tempted by a Trophy Whitetail that is completely out of place out on the prairie.

Don't shoot the first mule deer you see unless it is what you are looking for. Be sure to stop in town and put some out of state money into the local economy.

If it rains or snows and melts do not drive into farmers fields across the prairie tearing stuff up. If a gate is closed when you get there make sure it is closed when you leave and vice versa.

Stop and talk to the people they are generally very nice. Wave at them on the road because they will be waving at you. Don't shoot the stop signs.

Nemont,

Thanks for the advice. I have promised myself that I will not shoot the first muley buck I see. We will be in a rental so I'm sure we will stay off the prairie or farm fields. Two of the three of us grew up on a farm here in the south so gates will not be an issue. I have been suprised how helpful the people I have spoke with over the phone have been while getting all the arrangements together. Everyone seems to be glad we are coming to Montana to hunt. and yes we expect to put some money into the economy. The plan is to have the local processor do the meat work and ship it back to us when its done (being postive and hoping for more than a tag needs to be butchered).

If it does rain the back roads get real bad (off the main gravel roads). The gumbo mud is a cross between axel grease and peanut butter. Fills in the treads of the tires and you can not turn or stop very well. You just bounce back in for in the ruts in the road if you are lucky. Also fills up the wheel well and will eventually stop the vehicle. If it rains wait until it freezes or the wind drys it out. If you walk your feet look like 2 basketballs and weigh 20 lbs each. Constantly 4 steps and kick. I got stuck a couple years ago for several days and could not even get back to camp. I will be in the area south of the lake around Jordan in 2 weeks. Good luck.
