What does everyone think of Winchester FailSafe 180's for elk? I am going back to the Jicarilla for the 3rd early hunt and don't expect the bulls to be bugling/responding as well as this year. I might take a .300 mag this year. What kind of performance have you had with Fail Safe's and elk? Thanks in advance...

As long as the factory cartridge goes off it will do the trick. I bought one box and had one that failed to go off. Lost some confidence in them after that. Probably was a one in a million chance but...

beanman,
had the same thing happen, as it turns out though it was my fault, I lubed my bo. lt down with butter greese that i use in my bullets for black power.
it was a raining out and i didn't have any thing else.
that night the temp went down to 7 below and in the morning had 5 new inches of snow.
i jacked in a load and did'nt go far when i pulled up on cow.
click.
never use heavy greese on your bolt.

Ive used fail safe in my 7mm and took 2 6 point bulls with them... thats all I shoot is fail safe.

LAST EDITED ON Jun-07-04 AT 03:41PM (MST)[p] If they group well shoot them. I have heard good things about them. I would go with the scirocco in 180 grain.

LAST EDITED ON Jun-08-04 AT 11:59PM (MST)[p]I killed a bull this past season with a 180 grain Nosler at 45 yards. He fell over in his tracks dead, and his heart was literally cut in half. I was impressed with the bullet performance but I can't seem to get very good accuracy out the Remington loads I shoot at the range.

I shoot a 300 Ultra Mag and was thinking about trying the Scirroco's in 150 grain or maybe 180. I like to hunt in the thickest timber I can find and don't expect many shots over 50 yards but you never know. Also would like to use the same loads for mule deer.

By far the best hunting bullet I've used is the J36 from Lost River Ballistics. They are awesome! They have really high BC's for long range shots, and they don't have any lead so they are great for high velocities too. I shoot them with my '06, 300 ultra mag, and my 30-378 mag. Last year we shot two big AZ bulls and two nice coues with them. Great performance.

I would like to try the J36 bullet but lordy there way pricy by the time you find a load that works you could be into ullets by thereselves 100 plus $$$$$
