I deer hunted over there in 2002. Bumped into a couple elk hunters on the road, but none seen in the field. I climbed up to some high elevations and saw some elk. Not a high density, but some big bulls. They were way the hell up there in some difficult to inaccessible places. One I watched with my spotting scope in the same exact meadow 3 evenings in a row. Nobody was hunting him. He had like 8 cows. At night there was not a lot of bugling even with cold weather. I could hear this same bull go back and forth with one other bull in a basin about 2 square miles. Saw 90% deer droppings and only 10% elk on my whole trip. I think you will find some up there but don't be too picky. And stalk conservatively so as not to bump them if posssible. Not like AZ where a guy can move from bull to bull with ease.
I could not imagine trying to stalk the bulls in the places I saw them. A tremendous amount of uphill effort for one chance. There are a lot more deer hunters to mess you up than elk hunters. You'll probably need to backpack in wherever you go due to all the deer camps down low. Even a downhill pack out of that place will be tough, it's so steep everywhere.
