Utah Elk---Quality

LAST EDITED ON Jun-11-04 AT 09:41AM (MST)[p]It never ceases to amaze me how people are hell bent on ruining a good thing. All of this talk about quantity and quality is crazy. I see on the mule deer forum how people are so upset about the failing Utah deer herd and how something needs to be done. Utah has one of the best, if not the best, elk herds in the west, but yet the hunters are not happy. Unless each and every one of us can go shoot trophy animals on an annual basis, they complain. Get real. This is not going to happen. The supply cannot equal the demand, therefore, we need to take a turn.

Lets take bogus and biased surveys provided by the sportsmans voice and ruin the greatest resource in terms of wildlife we have in Utah. When you do draw your tag then come back here and complain about pressure and no elk.

I have made my plans and applied in Utah around the rules that were set. I did not complain, just played by the rules. I am still waiting my turn. When my turn does arrive, and if it arrives, something I will gamble on, I want the same opportunity that the people who drew before me enjoyed. I see the Mailman has shot a great bull in Utah. I want to too.

LAST EDITED ON Jun-11-04 AT 09:32AM (MST)[p]ktc,

Curious about your thought that the Utah deer herd is perhaps the best in the west. Have you hunted out of state lately? I hunted 4 states last year for muleys and I'd say that out of the 4 Utah would be my last choice for a regular season hunt.

Hmm Utah has the best elk hunting but the deer herd sucks. Do you think theres a correlation? I love the ut le elk hunt nothing like hunting ONCE every 39 years..

Exactly deerlove!

Ty I would suggest you look at the numbers from Arizona. Look at the number of animals harvested on a heard that is one third the size of Utahs. They have 8500 draw only bull elk permits every year.

The numbers of bulls going into the record books, is about 2 to 1 vs. Utah in recent years.

Please explain how they have such incredible opportunity yet they have potentially two new world record elk and more 400" bulls than Utah last year.

No one is asking the DWR to ruin the quality of the herd here in Utah, simply that they think and work toward ways to increase opportunity WITHOUT ruining the quantity and quality of animals.

The idea of waiting 20 more years on top of my previous 19 years without drawing, is quite an unpleasant thought.

Cheers,
Pete

ktc,
by the way, the mailman is your father.
you will never shoot a bigger bull them him.
and he shot it in colorado.
you don't want to get into a pissing match.
about Utahs few bulls, with a quick comparison i see it is ranked as no. 8th,
that just seams to be a little below your marks.
sorry,

LAST EDITED ON Jun-11-04 AT 11:54AM (MST)[p]It does unless you're really lucky..
I started putting in for elk when I was 18, way back before the point system came into existence, and finally drew my first tag last year, and I am now 47. (29 years) And it had to be an archery tag to boot just to get down into some better odds. I don't think some people will ever get to experience a rifle hunt on one of the premium units, as there are 1500+ people who put in for 15-20 permits. If no one else ever starts putting in on those units, that means everyone there would draw within 100 years... But you figure how many new hunters, who don't but a very small chance in hell of drawing, put in each year, and then try to figure out how many more years that tacks on to a unit with the odds I just mentioned.
I don't think anyone wants to throw what we have got out the window, they just want to give a chance to a few more hunters each year. My 29 year wait was worth it, but I can't expect to ever have that chance again in Utah, unless I get really lucky, or win the lottery...
a*r

A bad day hunting is better than a Good Day at Work!!

Quality for sure is the most important thing, but the F&G need's to do away with the lotto and give tags to the fellers with the most point's, if they did that it would drop from 1 in 39 yr's to about 1 in 10. It sure as heck pisses off people that you have guys that put in 1 yr to draw a tag, and do it, when ya have someone that has been puttin in for the last 15 yrs and still no luck. The lotto system is not working for the hunters sure the F&S love it because of the money that they are making.
But as residents of utah we are paying far more already for any hunt than any other western state resident tag.

Master Bates,

I wish I could respond to you, but you are such a illiterate bastard I can not make heads nor tails of your english. Your english sucks.

If you decide to have an educated and civilized debate on whether or not to change Utah's draw system let me know. In the mean time I will try to decipher what it is you are trying to convey in your post. ;-)

LAST EDITED ON Jun-11-04 AT 01:03PM (MST)[p]My opinion definitely leans toward the quality side. It is a tough situation, but even if changes are made, the odds are still going to be really bad.

While I don't agree with C3 a 100%, I appreciate his point of view. If we could increase opportunity, and maintain quality, that would be great. My concern would be whether the DWR could pull it off. There have been a few examples of them allocating more tags with devastating results.

I just hope this is a well thought out process.

Elmaster101, why would an Iowa guy be so anxious to throw stones at people about the elk herd in their own state? If you could put a post up with some intelligence, punctuation, and spelling, I would be curious to know.

Thanks Saddlesore. C3 I can appreciate your opinion and you do have some great insight. I too would like more opportunity if this could happen without damaging a good thing. Hell Deerlove, while once in 39 years is a concern it surely is a better than never in 22 years. At least I can plan on one hunt in 39 years versus never. It may be in a wheelchair with slobber running down my face, but it will happen. ;-)

Master is from Iowa? What does a flatlander from Iowa know about elk hunting in Utah? Go to school HillbillyMaster.

Hey KTC,

What the hell are you up to, ya trouble makin' sucker!!

Somebody told me you were over hear stiring up more trouble so I figured I'd come check it out. When we going riding amigo? I'll bring a packhorse of beer!! ;-)

Hey, don't let this Elkmaster dude get under your skin. There is someone like him on every website I've ever been on and the general rule with these guys is "bigger the hat, smaller the herd." In this case, bigger the mouth, smaller the IQ.

I read his blowhard posts over on the Poaching thread and every site has one just like him. Just ignore him. What I've found is people like that who talk the loudest about poaching and trespassing are always the FIRST ones to poach and trespass.

And the louder they complain about poaching, usually the bigger the poacher they are. Just calm down and don't get too western on me buddy!! I don't want you to become one of those "I hate everything and everybody guys".

Tell Elkmaster to stick with pheasant hunting and leave this stuff to the big boys. ;-) Give me a holler when you want to ride dude.

Well, had to come check in but I gotta run. Hate this website, think everybody but about 10 people on here are idiots, and this place is against my religion. C'ya buddy.

Good to see you back on the forum HoundDawg, things got real boring after you left the bear forum. Utah elk hunting, yeah, I have one bonus point. Looks like I will be shooting at spikes for a while.

HowndDawg,

How the hell have you been? I thought I would never see you here again, but I knew if I could stir up some controversy, you would come back. You love it here.

It is time to ride. You will only pack one horse with beer? We won't even get started.;-) We should go scout out some timp sheep. ;-) Have they moved into your haunts yet? Me Western? I do not own a mule, therefore, I cannot be or get Western.:)

There for a minute Elkmaster was irritating me like a rash on my ass. He is sexually frustrated and needs to buy a plane ticket to Wells, or spend some time on Blinddate.com for some action. Maybe then he could relax and find some humor in some of the posts. He should change his name to Ringneckmaster or something. Last I checked the elk herd in Iowa was not too good.;-)

Oh well, time to take a hiatus from MM. It seems I cause too much trouble. I am too selfish wanting one elk tag in my life. I will contact you.
