I was out scouting for elk today(June 12, 2004) and I found a big herd of elk. I didn't see all of them. I seen cows and new born calves. When we spooked them the cows and the calves started to mew like crazy...then, in with the herd was a big bugle! I was so shocked to here a bugle during this time of year. And I was shocked that there was a bull with the cows and calves. I was wondering why the bull bugled? I want to know when was the earliest bugle you ever herd?

Last year I jumped a herd of elk on June 26th, and as they ran down thru the trees, a bull bugled twice. Kind of a weak bugle but he was trying pretty hard. Previous to that, mid-July was the earliest.. Gets the blood pumping knowing that we're only about two months away!!!

A bad day hunting is better than a Good Day at Work!!

Elk are vocal all year round. Bulls will bugle anytime but we tend to only hear them when we are chasing them in the fall. And of course the have 1 thing on their mind in the fall making them more vocal. I have heard bulls bugle in November and December, is that early or late?

Widow Maker, I would guess that the bull bugled to gather the herd back together. At least this is what he would do in the fall. I have never heard a bull bugle in June nor seen one in a herd. The earliest I have heard and seen bulls with cows and bugle is August 10th

I talked with one of my buddies and he said when he used to live in northern Idaho, he was a logger and he would here elk bugling all the time throughout the year.

Elk are very vocal year around... thats how they communicate.... and this time of year you should not be disturbing the cow elk with their calfs... should stay your distance... and the deer will be having their fawns soon ... you shouldnt be out tromping around... stay on the roads... and give the deer and elk a chance to relax and regenerate their energey.

LAST EDITED ON Jun-13-04 AT 05:46PM (MST)[p]Hey Joel, I was on the road, we just happen to come across them. They were of the road 50-70 frickin' yards. We just happen to be there the same time as they were. Think before you talk. Just a little hint.

p.s. What the hell do you think I was doing?

Im not sure what you were doing? I was out all week end and seen over 300 elk and none spooked so Im not sure what you did too spook em! I seen elk 70 yard off the road alot of elk none spooked!

When I was out shed Hunting in March I ran onto a herd of 18 raghorns that were fighting and bugling like it was September. Pretty dang fun to watch 4 bulls in a pushing match all at once.
