Boquillas Ranch Clean-Up - Unit 10 Arizona

I talk with a lot of hunters from all over the country every year about hunting elk, deer and antelope in Arizona's Unit 10. Many want to hunt on the Boquillas Ranch and it's great country for sure. The Boquillas Ranch takes in the west half of Unit 10. A lot of other folks come here to hunt for elk sheds each year. The Arizona Game and Fish Department and the Mohave Sportsman's Club sponsor a clean-up project on the Boquillas Ranch each year to comply with an agreement with the Navajo Nation to keep the ranch open to public access. We need all the help we can get this year. This year the clean-up project is scheduled for June 26. The group will meet at Pica Camp off Highway 66 at milepost 123 at 8:00am. Each participant will need to sign in and get an access pass for display in the windshield of their vehicle. Routes and areas to work will be suggested by the local Wildlife Manager. Litter picked up will be collected at Pica Camp between 5 and 6:00 pm. Come and help keep this great hunting area open to public access. (Don't bring ATV's, they have been prohibited by the ranch for a while.)

Hey Guys! Any takers out there? We really could use your help. This could be a good way to get to know some really good elk country.

LAST EDITED ON Jun-19-04 AT 01:58AM (MST)[p] Personally, everytime I have the opportunity to spend time in these areas I always pick up a shocking amount of trash along the roads. I was in unit 8 several weeks ago and picked up a huge leaf bag full of rubbish along FS 141. Most of it was beer cans, beer bottles, and the cartons that hold them. Pathetic!

Last deer season, in southern Utah, while scouting around during mid-day, I often stopped to pick up the same types of road side litter. One woman at a campsite saw me picking up a couple of beer bottles and asked,"Why are you doing that?", with a truly puzzled expression on her face. I asked her what she meant and she said,"Well, you didn't make that mess did you?" I replied, "Of course not, Ma'am, that's the point. If someone like me doesn't come along and pick it up, who will?" She just stood there and wandered back to her chair and sat down. The trash had been in plain sight and her party's expansive camp was setup close by, yet they hadn't bothered to scoop up the garbage. Maybe I should have asked her,"Why?"

This has always been an "issue" for me since I was a boy. My Dad was pretty good about making up "red up that mess dammit" when we were kids so I guess it stuck. I've had the opportunity to camp and hunt in Unit 10 quite a few times and if we lose access to that ranch lands it will be a tragedy. So, if you can make it, go help clean up some thoughtless peoples' mess.

LAST EDITED ON Jun-19-04 AT 12:30PM (MST)[p]AZBucksnort,

I really appreciate the fact that there are hunters, and people in general, like you around. I can't stand to see trash when I am out hiking and hunting and I too have had strangers, and even friends look at me weird when I stop to pick up garbage on the trail.

I'm not sure if people are lazy, oblivous or just plain stupid, but if you are a hunter and leave a pile of trash behind when you leave camp you are ruining all of our reputations. I try to pick up at least one piece of trash every time I am in the woods. You would be amazed at the difference you can make to a particular place over time. I also believe that when people see trash they are more likely to throw there own on top of it, so clean trails seem to stay that way.

Hunters, next time you are out take a garbage bag and clean up the parking area before you leave! Pick up the beer can you pass every time you hike into your hunting area! And next time your knucklehead buddy throws a pop bottle into the bushes, don't say a word. Just walk over and pick it up and put it where it belongs. Shame does wonders.

wish I could join you for the cleanup day but I am a long way off and have a 1 year old to tend to!

Can't wait until next weekend until I am doing my part in cleaning the ranch that I love to hunt on

LAST EDITED ON Jun-22-04 AT 03:48PM (MST)[p]I'll be there with my boys helping to serve dinner & breakfast with the ADA! If you see a funny looking fellow with dark rim glasses continually barking out orders to his two rowdy boys, that's me! Be sure to say hello!

John, how old are your little ones (mine are 9 & 7)? Sounds like there will be a whole gaggle of them running around. Good stuff....

I would personally like to thank all those who particpated in the Boquillas Ranch Clean-Up Project. Those of us who live closeby appreciate your help. This is in our "backyard" and it is our "Playground", so to speak, but it is also one of the favorite hunting areas here in Arizona. It is open to public access and those who participated really helped to keep it that way. The final tally of those who helped adds up to 138 people and they made a heck of an effort. The trash trailer that Game and Fish brought up ended up with a well rounded load. Probably 60-80 percent of the litter brought in was old ranch litter, as usual, but it still helps us all out. Thanks to the Mohave Sportsman's Club for sponsoring the event for the 13th year in a row. Also thanks to the Arizona Deer Association for the dinner and breakfast they put out for those who made the trip. There were representatives from: Mohave Sportsman's Club, the Arizona Deer Association, The Arizona Game and Fish Department and Commission, the Arizona Hang Glider Association, the Arizona Elk Society, the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, Arizona Antelope Foundation, National Rifle Association members, Arizona Desert Bighorn Sheep Society, the Yuma Rod and Gun Club, the Arizona Predator Callers, Jim Boyd and Friends, local hunters and residents and folks from all over Arizona and even including two gentlemen from Las Vegas, Nevada. This was a really great effort! Thanks to all.

LAST EDITED ON Jun-29-04 AT 08:55AM (MST)[p]I agree aztap, it was a great effort & a great evening out in the woods on Saturday night. Lots of good discussion around the fire, and I met a few really nice folks! I was there with my two little ones (plus one of their friends...). It was fun to see all those kids running crazy through the woods playing tag, war, hide & go seek, and generally have a good time.

It was cool to see the lion that was brought into camp on Sunday morning as well. Sounded like quite a 'varmit calling' experience those guys had. My boys could hardly contain their excitement when they got home and told their mother about it! That's what it's all about... ;-)

Chief & Antlerboy, it was nice to share a couple of cold ones with you two. Got some good laughs out of it to.... Quote of the weekend; "Do we get to keep the winch for having to listen to all that?" LOL Josh, that was one of the most hilarious things I heard all weekend!!! (you had to be there... ;-) )

Kudos to the chefs for putting out the grub, and kudos to the Mojave Sportsman for organizing!!

I also wanted to thank everyone who showed up to help and a big thank you to the organizations who helped put it on. We had a great time up there even with antlerboy along. Stanley, email me at [email protected] and tell Rich that me, antlerboy, and Tim, say hello! Oh yeah, antlerboy "SUCKS"
