LAST EDITED ON Jun-18-04 AT 11:28AM (MST)[p]Just wondering where all the Elk are in the Kamas unit? Supposedly fish and game want to limit the elk population to around 700 head, for its unit size its probably the most populated unit in Utah when it comes to elk. It's vast country above Oakley and Kamas thick timber and classic Rocky Mountain Elk Country! Where's the elk? Why not up the elk numbers in the unit? Why does the Kamas unit have to be general season for the elk hut, I'd rather see it spike only with, limited entry bull tags, hunting this beautiful territory should be worth the effort in larger bulls.Your thoughts and answers would be appreciated

ps:Stop killing the dam cows WITH cow tags!! Dont tell me you need the meat thats BS!

I agree with you on the cow thing. There is great oppertunity for there to be some huge bulls if it became an limited entry unit.

I hunted Elk up there about 9 years ago and didn't even see a cow and then the first day of the deer hunt I about got ran over by a nice 5 point bull comen through the trees. but I agree that there is potential for some nice bulls up there but by what I've heard by my brother inlaw that used to bow hunt up there is that the drought has not been to good for the elk up there, but thats just what I've been told I'm sure others would know better.

.....and the unit has a ton of private land all around the base of it.

This leaves access from up on top almost exclusively. The elk all winter on private land and thus the large number of cow permits.

These private land wintering areas for Utahs large elk herds are becoming a big problem for the DWR finantially.

Cheers,
Pete
