I shoot federal premium sierra gameking BTSP 150gr. at deer every year w/ no problems. I was wondering if anyone has killed elk w/ this load or if I should go to the 165gr. BTSP

How about using Federal Premiums with 160 gr Trophy Bonded Bearclaws. It give good expansion and weight retention. Look at the bonded bullet article in the July issue of Petersens'Hunting.

160 gr premium bullet will do the job (trophy bonder bear claw, nosler partition, failsafe, swigt A-frame, etc.). I use a 175 nosler partition.

I shoot a 280, which is a 7MM. Anyway, I shoot the 150 gr Nosler Partitions in the Fedral Premium cartridge. I have shot 10 elk in the past 6 years with the Partitions and I have never had an elk go more than 10 yards. Yearlings to 300 class mature bulls. The ballistic co-efficient is is the best in the 150 gr bullet. Find a bullet your gun likes, then hit the animal in the boiler and you'll do fine.

LAST EDITED ON Jul-01-04 AT 08:30AM (MST)[p]I have shot federal premium 160 grain noslers for over ten years and have not had any problems at all from moose to antelope ...

As recommended above, I would stick with a heavy, controlled expansion bullet.
On another board, someone from Africa just posted some results of 7mm Rem. mag. used on plains game. The general opinion was 160+ gr, premium bullets produced one shot kills with little tracking required, but lighter bullets almost always required a back up shot or two.
