Anyone know anything about hunting archery elk around the Unitas mountains(Utah). This is an over the counter area, I think.Thanks.

The uintas are a terrible place to hunt. No elk, millions of people and horrible scenery :)

I haven't been in a draw anywhere, on any side of them that didn't have elk sign in it to date.

The farther you can get from other folks the the more elk you'll see.

Another thing is to have really good waterproof boots and rain gear. It will pour on you every single afternoon all fall long. You have to learn to like the rain to hunt up there in the back country.

Cheers,
Pete

The Uintahs are tough.. you either have to be way high away from crowds or find the cows... The Hoop lake area can be good... in the last few years there have been some elk low in the area around Hoop Lake.. last year there wern't many elk but I did get a small 5X6 and I know a nother guy who shot a cow... anyway it can be a very tough hunt.

LAST EDITED ON Jul-01-04 AT 10:53AM (MST)[p]I seem to generaly agree with alot that has been said, I hunt in the Uinta's every year and I firmly beleive that if you put in the preseason work, get away from the weekend four wheeler junkies, and find were the elk are you will have success in the last 10 years my family has taken a dozen bulls all decent to really nice 5 points and a nice six point that I shot last year that scored around the 300 mark, its just a matter of work, the big bulls are there they just know how to hide there are ton of elk in the Uintas its just finding were they are each year is the trick one year you'll have a honey hole for that year or two then the next year there will be no elk around so like I said if your willing to put in the work you will find the elk.

Hey Jake

Do you go during rifle season or archery? Do you pack in with horses? I hunt up there each year during bow season and find it very hard to consistently get into the elk. I would like to talk further off line about why this unit has so few elk.

Thanks

I'll be up in the Flaming Gorge area the 9th--13th of Sept. Your welcome in my camp and I'll have the llama packsting along for packing out any harvest.

LAST EDITED ON Aug-16-04 AT 11:23AM (MST)[p]I hunt rifle, but I have gone with my bro. inlaw to help out on his archery hunts, we pack in with horses but it seems like each year it is harder and harder to get away from the 4 wheelers, especially during the archery hunt, my email address is [email protected] if you want any other info, and I would suggest maybe taking PleaseDear up on his offer, I have another Brother inlaw that does archery deer and Muzzleloader elk up around Flaming Gorge and he says that while he is deer hunting he always sees a dozen nice 5 or six point bulls up there, I went up scouting around there a couple weeks ago and saw a 5 point bull that looked like he would go about 260-280, but thats just my guess heaven only knows how accurate my scoring is, but overall I have no idea what the deal is with this unit, I think that one thing is the Uinta's are becoming more popular for the weekend four wheeler's and motorcyle's, but I have still found elk some years right in some of the most crowded wheeler area's, I think a big part of it also depends on how the winter and summer were, they are just crazy crazy animal up in the uinta's.

PleaseDear

Thanks for the invite but I will be hunting the South Slope with my son this year. He will be leaving on a mission next year so I will be alone again in 2005. I would like however to scout out the Flaming Gorge area if you have any pointers.

I spent 5 years hunting the North Slope in various places and found some good bulls but they were few and far between. When the DWR published the stats on the heard I switched to the South Slope because the numbers were better.

The Flaming Gorge ranger district area is super restrictive on ATV use. It has really cut down on that headache and put those guys that want to use ATV's together in an area and not all over heck with in the ranger district. I have no problem with the ATV users now that they are in areas for them to use.
I have a bear tag for up there and have been using my Stealth-Cam for scouting. I have a ton of elk photo's vs bear photo's!! High on the mountain to down low along the Carter Creek drainage. There seems to be elk all over high and low. Closing the deal with an arrow maybe a challenge but a guy/gal should be able to get into elk most days.

The farthest East I have ever been is above Browne Lake. I have never scouted the area you are talking about because there were so many roads I felt the elk would avoid the area. I must be wrong.

On thing that I found on the North Slope was the lake of winter range (South Facing Slopes). Have any of you guys found good winter range for the elk with evidence that the elk are using it?

You can hunt the Hoop lake area...hunt low and you should find some bulls early in the season.. they come down from the high country to breed the cows so you dont need to hike a long ways just get off the roads maybe a mile. The rifle hunt is a joke tow many people but the archery is not bad!

Browne Lake would be a great basecamp spot. There are 3-4 trailheads that lead out from that area.
Trail 017 goes all the way into the Potter Lakes and is one of our favorites, trail 020 goes up to the TeePee Lakes and on to Red Lake, lots of day hikers and fishermen on this trail but there are elk in there for sure. The Youngs Spring trail, 016 is another good elk area. That meadow at Youngs Springs can be full of elk every morning. Alot of folks just hike the Ute mountain trail to the Ute look-out, I think it is trail 005?? but the elk go over into the old logged out area and then come back into the timber along the Ute mountain area to daybed.
Even if you didn't want to 'trail area hunt' you could go in on a trail a ways and then bushwack hunt across to another trail to come out on and still be heading to your basecamp at Browne Lake. The ATV's can use the forest service roads only and not the trails......... to the best of my knowledge.
Good hunting for the bow and for the mzzldr seasons. Rifle----crowd control for sure!
