CO units 71,74,73

Looking to archery hunt one of these units in september for elk. Any ideas on where to start or better suggestions? Thanks

I have never bowhunted these units, however, I may hunt unit 74 this year if I can swing it. I have no experience in this unit, but I was told the Hermosa Creek drainage is a good bet.
An article in last years Rocky Mountain Game and fish has an article about Over the counter bowhunts for elk in Colorado, and lists the areas to the north, northeast, and northwest of Durango as excellent areas for elk, although the article was not specific on units.

Get your hikin boots on. I have always enjoyed hunting areas around rico colorado with my bow. Mcjunkin, creek, coal creek and areas in there. lots of awesome country and plenty of elk. I have hunted other areas closer to Durango with my rifle such as, la plata canyon and hermosa creek. Of course these areas also have plenty of elk in them. In these areas you will almost certainly be hunting at the 11,ooo feet mark and above. that is where the elk always took me. I noticed tracks down lower and have seen them lower but during the hunts i was hiking upppppp and down and uppppppp and down. The advice i would give, is start high and stay high.
