My grandpa and I drew region c tags for this october. We havent found a landowner to let us hunt on private property. Does anyone know of any good public spots in region C? Any suggestions? Any info on hunting BLM land west of Kaycee or in the bighorn natl. forest? thanks, I appreciate it

That unit never sells out because of all the private land and tough access. You really don't have to "draw". You can buy them during season because it is undersubscribed.

With that said, there can be some good hunting. The bottom lands have some good whitetails and there are some good muleys there as well. I have seen some decent muleys in the bighorns. Depends what kind of buck you are looking for, how much time you have to scout, what kind of shape your grandpa is in, etc. Good luck this fall.

We just want to be able to hunt in that beautiful country, have a good time, and hopefully harvest a respectable buck like at least a 20" muley or 13" antelope. We will only have about 2 days to scout before season. My grandpa isnt in real good shape and usually stays close to the roads. He still has fun though and I can still walk as far as I want to. We were thinking of maybe just going out there and spending a day knocking on doors and asking landowners for hunting permission.

You should get ahold of the game warden for the area you would like to hunt,he can get you a list of ranch's that you can contact. You should be able to find something.

Okay, first thing about Region C Mule Deer is this:
All the areas West of I-25 (mountains, mostly) start for rifle on Oct. 15, all those East (plains) start on Oct. 1.
Oct. 15 openers coincide with most of the Elk rifle openers for the same bunch of country (Bighorns, East of the Bighorn Divide). Things get pretty busy up there in places. Takes a hard worker to pull a biggun' out of there during these times. Can be done, though. Kaycee as a jumping-off point is not a bad choice.
Come down to the rest of the Region, Oct. 1 areas, you've got a lot of hunters hitting the accessible public, which does exist in quantity and somewhat in quality, but it is spread out, and you've got to get in EARLY. Otherwise one's chances at a 4-pt.-plus diminish by the day. Those big guys know where to go when the shooting starts.
If the budget is there, go for the rancher. That is my ever-so-humble opinion.
If it ain't, coming in blind, closer you get to, or on, the Bighorn plateau, the more fun you'll have. Just don't run low on gas when the hunt dictates you've got many miles to go for the next set-up, or the weather turns.
