MY NEPHEW HAS BEEN TELLING ME ABOUT THIS SITE FOR A YEAR. I HAVE BEEN READING YOUR FORUMS AND THINK THEY ARE GREAT. THERE IS ALOT OF GREAT HUNTERS OUT THERE. HOPEFULLY YOU GUYS CAN HELP ME OUT. I DREW A 2ND SEASON BOWHUNT FOR UNIT 23 AND I HAVE NEVER HUNTED THE SOUTHWEST PORTION OF THE STATE. ANY HELP YOU GUYS CAN GIVE ME WILL BE GREATLY APPRECIATED.

THANKS,

I saw a bunch of elk last late summer/early fall while deer scouting. They were rutted up pretty good. There was 4 or 5 bulls running around and about 40 cows, nothing bigger than 5x5 though. They were South and East of Whiterocks mountain. Also on Cradle Mesa there was elk sign at every dirt tank that had water, even down in the lower country that didn't look like good elk country. There was cactus around and oak and junipers, no pines or anything like that. This spring while hunting turkeys in the Northern part of the unit I saw a few elk but I have a feeling and have heard from folks who have hunted it that with the limited access and amount of tags that every one crowds in up in the North end near Luna and the elk get skittish quick. Visibility also sucks up there and you can not really glass for anything. I did find a nice heavy 6 point shed in there though so the bulls are in there. That Northern country has some seriously nasty overgrown thick bottomless canyons and I am sure the elk just bail off into them when the going gets tough. If I had that tag I would hunt them in the lower more open stuff and glass for them like they were deer, put them to bed and then stalk them. There might not be as many elk down low but I bet they will be easier to kill once you find them. Good luck

Thanks for the info. I will be heading up there a couple of times to scout. Do you have any recommendations on which map to purchase? The unit has the apache national forest and the gila I don't know if you have to get both maps.

thanks,
Danny

I have them both. The Gila one I have is better but that may be because my Apache one is ancient. With either of them and topo maps from www.topozone.com or the USGS you should be able to find your way around just fine. Pretty much all roads either end up at the Highway or the State line or both and both are marked very clearly. The forest service maps have some tanks that my topo's did not show and as always water is important when hunting elk around here. Good luck.

Oh yeah, and if you see any coues deer I would really like to hear about them. Thanks.

Bullwidgeon,

I too am going to be hunting 23 this fall during the October Rifle season. I am trying to find away to get away from the crowd around luna. I did notice that I could get to the back side of the unit along the Arizona border if I came down from Alpine AZ. Is this a crazy idea?

Cheers

There are a few roads that will take you from our unit 27 into unit 23 in NM. They might be less crowded. Anything South of the Pueblo Park road would require horses and if you have those I am sure you will not have any problem escaping people. Good luck guys

Thank you Bret for the help. I called the Ranger Station in Alpine AZ and they indicated that it would be fine for me to go in on 281 from their side. He suggested leaving evidence @ the Kill site if we have any trouble with an AZ warden. I'm going to set up a trip to come out and Scout the country in Early September.

Cheers

Roadtrip:

Could you please let me know any info you find? I drew a muzzleloader tag for the same unit. I also was planing on staying on the AZ side near alpine. Also, if anyone could suggest what maps might be useful and where I can get them it would be appreciated!

Devin

I'll be hunting 23 as well this will be my first time in that part of the State, we will be going to look over the area before the hunt (muzzleloader) could some one give me some places to store the meat which is close to the unit, just in case. Thanks
