Hey guys I'm wondering if you're getting good rain and snow where you live in Utah?
Here in north western Nevada we are getting above average precipitation. The Sierras are getting dumped on with snow and the desert ranges are getting good amounts of rain and snow. We should be looking good for antler growth over here this year how about in Utah?
Thanks

LAST EDITED ON Feb-06-19 AT 12:45PM (MST)[p]Had a solid 12" of snow at my house in West Jordan over night. Brighton & Snowbird ski resorts both have snow bases of 126" and that will probably jump up after totals are updated tomorrow. Year to date snow total for Snowbird ski resort is 356". Total snowpack percentage for the state ranges from 105% up to about 171% (as of 02/05/2019).

All the wildfires should be full of lush green grass this year.

Wow that's a lot of snow. It sounds like a big winter over there I hope the critters are doing OK out there on the winter ranges.
We were supposed to get another storm over the weekend in NV so we'll see if it happens it may come your way and dump more snow on you also.

Been Decent here this year so far in NE Utah!

True!

But We need some Proper Management on the Herds as Well!

One More thing to take in to Consideration!

Most of these Percentages are based on 10 or 20 year averages!

We've continued for many years now with less precipitation!

So even when 130% of Normal sounds outstanding it's not Quite all it's cracked up to being!

Last year in this area was the Least amount of Snow I've ever seen on any year here!

Years like last Year Really Hurt the Average!

Good point elk
Last year I was down on the San Juan in November and it was very dry and very overgrazed by cattle.

I heard Wasatch front is supposed to get another 40?+ between tomorrow and next Friday.... it just keeps piling up!

Hydraulic normals are calculated on a 30 year cycle.

And unless I'm mistaken, I believe the ?normal? is calculated on the median, not the mean. That helps eliminate outliers like a super dry year last year.

Sorry Bessy. You?re saying that like 10 years and 30 years and the mean and median all are the same thing.

They are, in fact, quite different. Your concerns on the lowering of ?normal? precipitation levels is not well founded.

The water levels are in great shape.

No, the water levels THIS year are in great shape. I said nothing of last year. The question of the OP was about how THIS winter is. And THIS winter has been great so far, with more to come next week.

Do you really have to feel that you are right that badly that you just make stuff up? Is your alter ego tristate??? ;)

C?mon Bessy. It's okay to admit you were wrong on something and just move along.

So Where was I Wrong?

Water/Precipitation is Figured on 10,20 & 30 Year Averages depending on Who's Reporting it!

The OP is Smart enough to know what I'm Saying!

I'm Just saying Niller:

Yes,This Year is already better with more to come!

But it doesn't Fix Last Year!

The Best Part I See of it is the DWR Won't be able to use the Drought as Some BS Excuse as to why Game Herds are in PISS POOR shape in this State!

I Like buckhorn,I always have!

Just wanted people to understand them 130% Averages, which sound GREAT compared to last year, but Remember/Understand We have been Seeing Dryer Years/Less Precip for many many Years that makes that Average sound better than it really is!

Me Wrong NILLER?

Interesting discussion guys.
I really do appreciate the feedback and information.
We just got another 10 inches last night north of Reno at the 5000 foot elevation.
This storm will likely wind up in Utah and y?all will get some more. I hear there is another one on the way in the next few days as well.
If this keeps up we may be in danger of getting too much snow.

SE Utah what is the snow fall/rain looking like.
Looking on the web it sure looks like a lot.

As shown on the figure, the ?normal? is taken from 1981-2010 and it uses the median, not the mean. So last year has no bearing on the calculation. (Nor does any super dry or wet year, for that matter.)

Just sayin?! Bessy, wish you were going to the expo Thursday morning. I'd let you pay for application fees for every Book Cliffs hunt available!

Someone complaining about two grown men arguing about how much snow is on the ground? That's weird...

It's Sunday at 9:23 pm and it's been snowing for a few hours now and I have at least another 2.5 inches of snow on my driveway.

buckhorn yeah this year we are getting good moisture and where off to a good start but we are still in a drought I hope the moisture continues threw the year and we get another good winter next year.

Do you think antler growth will be improve in 2019 or should wait until 2020 to draw?
Thanks

It's always a gamble. It may be worse in 2020, but who really knows? I think this year will definitely be better than last year, but maybe we end up having a super dry spring and summer? Plus, it's already doom and gloom! They're already speculating that because of how much moisture we've had so far, that the fire season is going to really bad! We can't win! **Eye roll**

My opinion is this...If you have a chance to draw a tag, you take the tag! You never know what the future will hold. Plus, if you do draw and if something happens, you can turn the tag back in. Moisture outlook as never influenced whether I apply for a tag or not. But with how much snow we've got so far this water year, I would speculate that antler growth is going to be good.

buckhorn what species deer or elk and what area you planning on putting in for?

Does more snow equal more winter kill?

Sounds like snow is great for moisture but I always wondered where the line was to mortality rates..

+1

Does more snow equal mortality? I think a lot of it depends on the timing. Most of Utah didn't have deep snow or severe cold on the winter range until recently, and then only in some areas. Even though it's deeper now, I think we're late enough into winter that the animals got it whipped for the most part. I also think that horn growth depends a lot on summer moisture and how the feed holds out through July. 2018 was horrible for growth on deer and elk both I thought.

I've tried to research the biggest winter kill factors and the biggest things that cause a die off seem to be:

- Early snow that sticks
- A long winter(starts early, ends late, or both)
- Extremely cold temps accompanied by large amounts of snow w/out reprieve for weeks at a time (one hard month is what seems to kill animals)

This winter seems like it will be an all around good winter for the animals. Not too much snow and cold they can't survive, but enough that they will hopefully have a good green summer of feed ahead of them.

You are right Bess. Winters used to be much more severe in Utah than they are now. That's why snowmobile sales have been down so much. Hell I don't even have a sled anymore.

By the way I was being sarcastic on winter kill. The DWR justs needs something to blame besides overhunting and this year they can't really use drought as an excuse. Maybe it will be coyotes again.

I've been keeping an eye on the remaining 12 deer in our unit and they seem to be fat and healthy still, so it should be a banner year for hunting.

Are you still doing OK?
Here in North West Nevada we have been getting storms pretty regularly for the last several weeks. Today Sunday the 17th we are getting snow pretty much all day. I hope our deer can survive on Juniper and sagebrush. How are things looking in Utah? Are the deer OK?

We've still been getting Storms!

I Think the Number of Road-Kills are taking more Deer than anything right now!

Yep. We?re still doing okay. Well, not just okay, but doing really well. Great water year thus far. Still enough time for it to go to crap if the spigot turned off, but looks like this will be a good one.

We could use a bit of a break over here. We?re expecting another front to come through Wednesday night and Thursday morning.
Enough snow for now let's hope for some good spring rains though.

Elkassassin your right we are doing good the problem is the ground was really dry so if it's a slow melt we will be doing good but not great but where off to a good start we need a few more years of good moisture

Yes the bad part we had no feed going into this winter the animals are struggling to find feed

So why in the He!! aren't we shutting shed season down till April 1 heck even May 1 the writing is all over the wall....

I was on some Northern Utah winter range the past couple of days (never left pavement). The deer looked okay, but definitely like they were ready for a break. This moisture thing is a two edged sword, not enough and the feed isn't there, too much and big winter kill happens.

Looks like more weather is on the way next week. I think we might see slightly above average late season winter kill this year.

There will be some winter kill this year, no doubt. But the conditions are not ripe throughout this winter for an extensive winter kill.

This winter has been about as good as we could expect coming out of last year's drought disaster. It will not be enough to pull us all the way out, but last year didn't put us all the way in either. If we could get another winter next year just like this year? Man, we'd be in really, really good shape for 2020 to be a banner big game year in Utah. But, you just never know what awaits when it comes to these delicate balances!

Preach, cat. Preach!

We just got another soaking here in Northwest Nevada.
It started raining last night and then turned to wet heavy snow this morning piled up about 3 inches at the 5000 foot level and then melted off by afternoon.
Hope this storm gets to you guys in Utah and it's wet and warm!

Looking like it could start to get dangerous now.

As of this morning SE Utah is 199% snowpack

S Utah is 194%

That big burn scar through central Utah is around 140%

Huge difference from last year. But here it is end of March and we are still piling snow.

Below average. Unless this spring is damp, it will be a rough fire season

I’m asking this question because I want to know what it’s like where you live so please post the moisture conditions where you’re at such as northern New Mexico southern Utah etc. here in Western Nevada we have been getting some moisture. Not a lot but it’s better than nothing.

Top of Cedar Mtn on the road to Kolob Res, Road about 5 miles pass the Money homes you see above Town.

Hoping to build up there this spring If the money rolls back in. Covid derail us last year for building it.
Got a 32x36 2 story cabin kit that is all 4 walls I still have to buy rafters and plywood for roof . Have Metal sheets for the going over the plywood roof.
Brought some basement forms for doing a basement, since it has to have a 5ft footing I decide to do 9ft with 3ft above ground 6 ft below so I can get the cheaper footage added to the cabin.

Hahaha any thread with Bessy and Vanilla is like taking a dump at 11:59pm when the clock clicks midnight it's the same **** different day....

Dang, throws a jab based upon a 2 year old conversation! Nice work, Bocephus. Nice work.

You can get all the data you want off the links provided above by ruger, grizz, etc. for specific areas. Utah, overall, is in pretty poor water condition right now. As I've said before, fish and animals (and people) need water. We don't have a lot of it right now. But, drought is not new here either.

Like the old bobcat said two years ago: Mother Nature is in charge. We can't fix the weather.
