Looking for any suggestion on this unit for the september elk hunt. Never been to CO. Any help would be appreciated.

I have heard good things about 86, which is over the rigde to the east from 82. Either side is very steep and mostly wilderness, so you need horses or strong legs and back to carry an elk out. The research I have done shows good populations south and southwest of Cotopaxi on the East side of the Sangres. Took a buck in 82 in the mid-southern end of the Sangres last fall. Didn't see an elk there hunting at timberline. I am sure that there are great places to hunt in 82 for elk, just don't know them. Hopefully, you can find someone else who does.

You probably couldn't have picked a rougher unit in Colorado for your first elk hunt. Ambitious to say the least.

Get in the best physical condition of your life. Elk can be found anywhere its hard to get to that has green grass, willows, and timberline edge.

P.S. Bring your knife and fork.

This is my preferred unit, mostly because it is in my back yard. Hunting pressure is very limited because of the terrain. With more specific questions I can provide more and better information. Harry
