Lots of private land and checkerboard blm. There are good deer in the area but has been especially hot and dry this year. Look for water sources and concentrate in the deeper sagebrush areas. Has been extensive CBM drilling in the area so there are lots of roads.

Thanks PY, I have heard its been real dry and water will be key. It looks like the drilling is picking up on the Atlantic Rim project.

Thanks

AverageJoe,

This year, things have changed a bit in area 84 with the last remaining "open" ranch on Atlantic Rim closing down public access. The only public access in the area now is on the Daley WGFD unit and along the block public along the south border of the unit. There may be a Game and Fish "walk-in" area open again this year for deer, but the portion of the area within it provides pretty marginal mule deer hunting - take a look at the walk-in atlas when it's available later this summer. The lack of public access is why the WGFD allowed the tag to cover the general season in area 82 to the south as well as the 84 unit.

Thanks, I just found that out after talking with the bio, it will open up lots of public land but it will throw us in with the masses in the "W" Gen tag holders. But I can't complain with the extra option.

The drilling has really picked up. Anadarko is going to build 100 some drilling pads in the northern part of 82 in the Muddy Creek area east of 789. Not to mention the rest of the producers that have permits to drill in the area. The bad thing about these areas, are that they are in the two major winter range and winter travel routes for mule deer. This will be the last good year for 82 and 84.

Maybe it will become like the Jicarilla in NM that are crisscrossed with road and a ton wells, but they have some huge bucks and elk.
