My hunting partner and I will be going archery hunting for elk in Montana this September. We were planning on hunting the area south of Bozeman. Another buddy of mine seen some good bulls there last year. I'm also looking for backup plans or even a different starting point. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Kris

There used to be a lot of elk in the Goose Creek and Bear Canyon area, when I used to hunt there. It's been a few years, but the quantity always was good - just not a lot of the bigger bulls.

Good luck

Hi Kris; A ways south of Bozeman but lots of Elk in the Black Butte area of the Gravely Range. They head for the timber after opening day and stay quiet, until there hormones make them pop off but a fun area to hunt. Have to get away from the ever popular divide road on top. Moedogee

That whole cherry creek area is awsome :) You might even see a few buffalo! ;)

I'd try the area south of Gardiner if it were me. Early season rifle hunt!

Thanks for the tips guys. This will be my first elk hunt in Mt. It's getting close and I'm starting to lose sleep. Can't wait.

Last year I bivy'd for elk south of Bozeman, about 6-7 miles north of yellowstone. Had two bulls in on the 1st morning. Snow and wolves moved in on the next day and hunted two more days w/o cutting a fresh elk track. Moved to a different area and chased elk around for the rest of the trip. Talked w/ a few locals and they all agreed that the best place to find elk down there is is to find where the wolves are not. I'm no expert, but took the advice and had a great trip. I can give you more details of where, if ya want.
