Colorado unit 14, 16, & 161

Hi all,
I'm planing a 2005 elk archery hunt in Colorado and was wandering
if unit 14 would be a good starting point? I'm looking for an area that I can backpack into that isn't over run with ATV's. How is the hunting in and around Mt. Zirkel Wilderness Area?
Also, which two weeks would be the prime time for calling in bulls?
P.S. This will be my first elk hunt and need your help!

You are going to run into ATV's and 4X4's all over unit 14. Try the Encampment river drainage in unit 161. I was into Elk every day in there a few years back. About a six mile hike from the trailhead ought to put you into some good country. Buy some maps from USGS and get started narrowing in on some areas.

There are a number of good areas in the units that are prime backpack areas. A few of them even hold some good bulls. Stick to the wilderness areas and you'll eliminate 90% of the hunters. Towards the end of the season the bulls are closer to the rut and generally will be bugling more in areas not hit by hunters.
