Since it is now hard(er) to get an Elk tag as an AZ resident, has anyone ever hunted the San Carlos Reservation? I'm fortunate enough in being able to afford (non-tropy hunt, I make good money but not that good.. ;) ) it. It looks as if it is on a first come, first serve basis. Is there a waiting list? How good are the non-trophy hunts? Any information is appreciated.

Thanks!

Carlos, go over to www.coueswhitetail.com and post a question. Amanda who owns the website was the game biologist for San Carlos for awhile and she can give you some of the best inside type info............I dont know the cost but I think the Trophy bulls are around 25,000 with a waiting list. With limited harvests and prime habitat, it just shows you what this state can produce.........Hope you have fun........ Allen Taylor......

Thanks for the info. The trophy hunt too expensive for me but the non-trophy hunt is okay. It looks like they only had 10 permits this year for the September hunts. I'll be contacting the San Carlos Game & Fish on how long the waiting list is. After looking into it a little more it looks like my opportunity to hunt the San Carlos is just about as equal as drawing an AZ Game & Fish tag. LOL! They should put me first on their list since the reservation has my name written all over it. ;)

Check out the video they just put out, it is awesome. The other unit only puts out up to 360 bulls! malay gap I believe is the unit. The video is elk hunting with the san carlos apaches I think. Are you related to Whitman? Good luck! I wouldnt mind hunting there someday.

shep,

basically there is no score classification for NON-TROPHY bulls on the San Carlos, however there are 3 main hunt units on the San Carlos and the MALAY GAP unit would be considered the so-called NON-TROPHY unit, bulls in this unit are primarily managed for hunter opportunity with the elk averaging about 330 B&C and for the upper class in this unit they go about 380 B&C but they are rare. the DRY LAKE and the HILLTOP units are the units which are managed for trophy quality with very limited tags and the elk there are well into the 400 B&C range, in 1997 the DRY LAKE unit produced a 9X10 NT that scored 502 6/8 gross B&C, if you're interested in seeing some pictures or any other info on the hunting of game here, i can do my best to enlighten you, give me a hollar at [email protected]

My friend Steve Chappell made a film there you should check it out it has some amazing bulls on it!

The San Carlos is THE place for monsters. I watched the new video and was greatly impressed with the guide. He's the one who has guided the same man twice or more and the clients goals were 400 + bull. The Tribe has done a fantastic job and they put out the horns to prove it each year...... i have hunted the sc rez.

no there is no waiting list [as u noted it is first come - first serve ].

non-trophy hunts quality, [depends on the guide u hire] or [the amount of time u spend scounting].

need info. e-mail [email protected]

The guide is the best. I have been on a number of hunts with Homer over the years. He has the best eye sight of anyone I have ever been with. I have taken a B&C bear with him. I have been with him on at least 3 elk hunts and his knowledge of elk and their habits is unbelievable. His record speaks for itself. Has any single person guided more hunters to B&C bulls in last 15 years than Homer?
