Backpacking/horsepacking foods?

I know that this question has made the rounds before, but wanted to know what you guys take on a backpack or horseback hunt for food.

Backpacking: dehydrated foods are the only way to go for me for main meals. Very lightweight, just add hot water/stir and eat out of the container (no dirty dishes)
instant oatmeal
cereal (such as grape nuts that is concentrated energy) Can use just hot water or powdered milk
Bread rolls (doesn't matter if they get squashed)
granola bars
candy bars

Other suggestions? What do you take in addition for a horse hunt?

Ground meat?

You know I came across something curious at the grocery store the other day. Ground meat that is already flavored and cooked that doesn't need refridgeration. It definately wouldn't taste like a nice steak, but would certainly be a nice addtion to a pasta meal.

Has anybody tried these.

I remember seeing somebody post that we should not eat meat so that we smell more like a herbivore when we sweat. It is an interesting idea and I am going to try it this season. would like to have meat on the final sunday though!

RE: Ground meat?

I will have to check out the meat. Haven't heard about that.

I have also heard about the not eating meat/scent elimination. However, to keep deer and elk from smelling you, you supposedly have to stop eating meat for a full 2 weeks before the hunt and all during the hunt. Don't know if I can do that. However, people that have done it swear that you can be upwind and not spook game.

RE: Ground meat?

We always used MRE's on horespacking trips. However now that I have been diagnosed with Celliac Disease I can no longer eat anything with wheat, rye or barley in it, so that limits what I can take. I now have to make my own MRE type meals. I fix a roast/potatoes/carrots and freeze in a vacume seal bag. Also can fix other meals and do same. Haven't been on a long trip since the diet change so don't know what I would do if out longer than my homemade meals would keep. Jerky and dried fruit I guess.
