Treestand for Elk - My Buddy's Nuts!

If my buddy sees this he's gonna put a broadhead through me! He says he's too old to hunt elk and they're too much work for him since you can't seem to shoot them off the road like deer.

He got a wild hair to set up a tree stand on a couple elk trails and ambush one. I hate to see the poor guy sit there all season. I can see him getting little ringy with nobody to talk to but himself. That and he's got some crazy idea to ration his food throughout the day so he can give himself a treat for every hour he can stay sitting there. That and he's got some crazy idea to pack a bunch of Diet Coke in to throw in the creek for something cool to drink. I told him he better get caffiene free if he plans on sitting still all day, but...

Anyways, before he sets out I thought I'd check with you elk hunting fanatics and see if you had any suggestions or advice for him (sit early, sit late, use a decoy, salt blocks, bugle, cow call, whiskey instead of coke, etc...). He can't read, so it could be a long 12 days!

The season is Sept. 8-20 (archery), so it will be hot and coming into the rut.

Thanks for the input!

I would take some salt blocks and cow
call and bugle,But if is going to kill anything
I would leave the whiskey in the truck intell
after he killed some thing. Take some water

Actually I'm probably going to use my treestand in Colorado this year for rifle season, my ground blind area is in a migration path , but I miss about 2/3's of the available trail's from the ground because of high brush and since I have a deer and elk tag I want to have every advantage, so maybe he's not so crazy, beside's with the rut starting and hot weather if he position's himself near water he just might score ! good hunting

Everybody calls him Mr. Lucky, so it'll probably work great for him. I'll probably get a call the first evening to bring my packboard on up. At least it's relatively close to the truck!

Tell your buddy to set his treestand near a wallow ...make sure he is in his tree stand from 10:00 am to 4:00 am the herd bulls will bed ther cows down in the timber then visit the wallow in the middle of the day!

Thanks, that's been one of the big questions - when's the best time to sit on it. I'll pass it along.

You westerners are to impatient. LOL I have stood in treestands all day, no food or water and killed my buck at last legal light. Conifedence is the key, you need to be sure you are in the right spot.

Treestands can be deadly for elk, wallows are great. Found some last year after I filled my tag and dad did great hunting there, missed a bull, saw elk every time (morning and evening) - none were midday (he sat all day) FYI - but many others have had luck midday.

please excuse my ignorance....
but what is a wallow?

sorry if this is a dumb question.

Mikey ---- Whether your bluffing us or not, a wallow is a small pool of water or seep that bulls and sometimes cows get into to cool off or mud themselves up to make them look and feel bigger & tougher or to keep insects off of them. Wallows can be used anytime of the year, but especially so in the month of Sept. Look for wallows that are active, (being used) If you're going to sit one for a length of time, pick ones that are near the bedding areas. (2/3) of the way up the mountain. These are the ones to sit from 11:00 to 3:30 and the last 2 hrs before dark. Forget the wallows that are low on the mountain at this time, as these are the ones used at night or 1st hour of daylight.

When you sit an active wallow, you can increase the odds a bull will show up to it by doing a couple non threatning things!

First of all do a lot of splashing around then give a few light chuckles along with a cow & calf call, whether a bull answers or not he now knows another bull is in his wallow, once he decides to get up & move around you can bet he'll come and check out who was there. He'll smell for where the bull urinated or raked around since when bulls rake they emit a scent from their forhead that marks their presence. Be patient he'll be there! ElkNut1
