i have been pondering on whether to use any of the
sexual attractants on the market (cow estrus, urine, etc...)
i have had fair success in getting into the elk during the rut.
but was looking for any advantage i can get??????
2nd year archery elk bowhunter, took a 5x6 last year on my hunt.scored just under 300".
what a thrill to bugle in those awesome creatures.
does anybody out in wapiti land use any of the attractants with any success? i've read articles where people dilute the mixture w/ water put in a spray bottle, then spray the air when getting close to the wapiti. then i've read other articles were other hunters have had lousy experience using attractants.
a good idea to spray on your clothes???
spray the ground, apply to the bottom of your boots, just ideas i have been pondering.
any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!!!

good luck to all you hunters heading to the sacred ground in the next couple weekends
and pray that your arrows fly true & straight!!!!!

I used some Cow elk in heat urine on an area near a ground blind I had built. The first group of cows to come by stopped, sniffed, and bolted. I haven't used any since.

It could have been your scent that spooked them. I use some as a cover scent which of coarse is all relative anyway since they will still smell you if the wind is wrong. Try it and if it works keep doing it. Sounds like you did something right last year.

First of all, congrats on your bull last year! Way to go --- doesn't get any better than that, does it?

I'll echo some of what's been said already. JMO, but I won't put elk scent anywhere I'm stand hunting (the elk know the area intimately, and I think it can spook them). If you're set on using some, I'd suggest limiting it to when you're setting up on mobile call-in situations; then you might try spraying it into the air around you. I haven't put elk scent DIRECTLY on my clothes for some time (a 300-class bull "hit the wall" at about 25 yards). Like many of you, I shower DAILY with hunter's soap and spray myself REPEATEDLY in the field with scent-killer. I admit I DO wear H.S. Fresh Earth wafers ...

I choose not to use urine because it totally takes away one of my valuable tools in locating elk and that is my sense of smell. I will use other cover scents but not urine.

Just my 2 cents

I have used cow elk estrus urine from carlton's calls. ITs the best i have found. the other sents i have tried just did not produce the same reaction. i have had large bulls rake the trees i have sprayed it on. i Used to spray it on myself while hunting to try and cover up more of my sent.(VERY VERY BSD IDEA)
Two years ago i had very large bull come down to my calling. i was set up under a large area of pines. i could not see through the bushes in fort of me. ALL i saw at first was the tips of his rack. then he came crashing out of the brush stop 12 feet from me. he was so close to me i could see the white of his eyes. i could do nothing i was in a spike only area and he was a 350-365 class bull. Then he started licking his lips and smell the air and he got really excited. i was shaking. then he look right at me. to a big sniff and all it took was two more steps in my derection and i jumped up yelling. i thought i was going to get a good stomping. but me jumping up the way i did though him off. He stood there for a few seconds just stairing. the i said hey big guy really loud and he bolted. After that i just pay attention to the wind. I would love to be that close to a bull again. it was a great experience. something i will remember for a long time

anyway good luck hunting this season
