Mule Deer rig

I am concerned about my mule deer setup. I am shooting a 301 grain arrow at about 270fps. I shoot out to 60 yards, but am concerned that these arrows are to light for the mule deer. Are they to Light?

Is that just the arrow or the arrow & broadhead? One thing you should check is the total arrow weight vs the pounds you have your bow set at. Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I believe you want a minimum of 6 grains of arrow weight per pound.

I used to know my kinetic energy and all that and have forgotten it but it sounds similar to yours. I shoot xx75 carbon arrows with a 100 gr muzzy and got my first mule deer this year at 55 yards and it was a clean pass thru. My bow is also shooting at 270 fps. Gary

I hope thats just the shaft weight and that you are going to tip it with a 100-125 gr braodhead still, if thats the case you are fine, if your arrow braodhead combo is only 301 gr. then yes you are way to light. Heres the kinetic energy breakdown, 301 gr @ 270 fps = 48 ft/lbs energy while 425 gr @ 270 fps = 68 ft/lbs energy. Thats a 50% increase in energy which is substantial.

Here is a link for a Kinetic Energy calculator

Above dakotakid already figured out you kinetic energy but when you go to that 425 grain arrow remember you won't be shooting 270fps anymore so you will have to find out how fast you are shooting with the heavier arrow to figure it out...
