I'm planning on going to Wyoming in a few years and have some questions. But first, I need to know if any of you have hunted there in recent times and are willing to share some general info with me.

Don't go! The deer are all dead, killed by Mt. lions, wolves, bears and Bush. Okay Bush didn't personally kill them but his thirst for energy did. Droughts didn't do them much good either.
A deer was seen in july but was killed on I80 before she could drop her fawn, poor thing she was the last one.

Sorry but I had too much spare time tonight. PM me and I could tell you a little, not much though.

Here is a post I made on another forum. No one responded to me so I figure why not post it here. Maybe I'll get a bite?

------

I've spent some time reading through the available data on Wyomings Game and fish website.

There are quite a few numbers for me to consider.

The one thing I have not been able to really determine yet is, what area I would really like to hunt for Mule Deer. Region G seems nice because it is relatively closer to me on the west coast.

I'm not looking for anyones special spot to hunt (I like being away from other hunters) but I am hoping someone could point me in the right direction as far as region or unit. I'm not looking for top notch trophy deer, but I am after mature 4 point bucks and I am willing to hike all day long. I plan on taking my father with me.

Thanks in advance,
-Dave

Hey Dave,

What type of hunt are you looking for? You mentioned taking your father. Do you want a high country, backpack type hunt, a lower elevation hunt later in the season, or something in between?

Region G is a good choice, but can take a few years and now a few bonus points to draw. It is also an early hunt where it takes a lot of effort to get to the bucks. buckspotter7

LAST EDITED ON Oct-28-07 AT 05:30PM (MST)[p]Personally, I'd like to do a high country hunt. I will be taking my father and maybe one of our friends with us though. I hate to say it but I don't think my dad can do a high country hunt.

We can put in effort as far as day hikes, several miles a day.

A lower elevation hunt sounds better honestly. Not looking for record book deer. Just mature 4 point bucks.

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

You can make day hunts in G, but in the Greys River it takes a few hours to get to country where you feel like you have a chance at a nice buck. Anything could happen when you are in the woods, whether you are 100 yds. or 4 miles from the truck. It's hard to beat the scenery and country in Region G, whether you kill a buck or not. There is some lower rolling country, between Smoot and Cokeville in the southern portion of G that hold fair numbers of deer.

You may want to look into Region F, near Cody. The season takes place later and better chance at deer in the lower country. Plenty of other wildlife to enjoy wathing like grizzly bears, bighorn sheep, elk, and antelope. It's an amazing trip! The end of the season is usually best and you should have a good chance at an average 4 pointer(18-24 incher). We've killed a handful of better bucks, but most have been average. The odds have always been really good to get a tag. It is our ace in the hole or last resort, however you look at it. Draw odds run 100% if it is your first choice.

Here is one I killed in F a couple of years ago.
