Well ... this is my first time into the elk forum. And this is going to be my first time elk hunting this fall.

I need help ... not with where .... but how. I am in BC

I'm no stranger to elk but just never hunted them....and you will see why in a minute.

I went scouting on the weekend and I am thinking that I hit a motherlode.

Within a 1 square km area .... here's what I found.

-Over 200 rubs from last year.
-Tonnes of beds ....
-3 fresh rubs this year
-Saw a cow elk with calf and a 3 point still in velvet,
-monster 6 point bull fully rubbed of its velvet
half a dozen old wallows
1 new wallow started

And I realize its a bit early yet ......

This is in an area that just opened its elk season for the first time last year and monster bulls abound.

Theres a couple small burns, aspen stands, pine stands (where the rubs were) .... trails all over etc...

I don't profess to be an expert or anything on elk ... BUT here's my predicament......I can't hear so how the hell do I hunt this if I can't hear the elk responding to me etc ...... I can bugle no problem etc .... but not hearing, I really am missing out on the joys of elk hunting and bugling them in.

Despite that, my eyes have made up for not hearing and I can spot and pick out animals like you wouldn't believe.

Any ideas ???????

Last fall, in its first season, several bulls just shy of 400 were shot ...... and I that bull I did see I figure would go an easy 360 .....

Bring a son, daughter, wife or girlfriend who can hear to point them out to you. Hopefully they get extremely excited over it which in turn, rubs off on you.

On a side note, with that much sign I'd doubt you are the only one who knows about the area.

Are you archery hunting? If not you wont need to bugle or cow call to get one. Just go ouot and still hunt the way you would for a Muley. Look for fresh sign, use your eyes and nose and I garuntee you will know when you are near a bull.

Good luck and post the pics after harvest.

I think bringing a friend was a good suggestion. Sorry but i dont see a way you could get close to them if you cant hear what they are saying. If the country is open you may be able to do more spotting and stalking i suppose.

Another idea is to just sponsor me and ill come up from Montana and go with you. Ill bring the tent, horses, etc. :)

HOW ABOUT A TREE STAND ABOVE THE WALLOWS OR ON THE TRAILS INTO THE WALLOWS, GROUND BLINDS ALSO WORK. THAT WOULD BE THE BEST IF YOU ARE HUNTING ALONE.

Watch the burns for feeding activity and set up on the trails that lead there from the bedding ares. Watch the wind! If you know where they bed you could set up 200 yards away and use a hoochie momma cow call, you'll just have to trust us that it sounds good. Then watch for the elk coming in. In the early season a lot of bulls come in silent anyway. I also agree with the tree stand over the wallow suggestion, in fact that could be your best bet!
