Missouri breaks elk

I drew a permit for an area in the Missouri Breaks. I have info from many sources, including a regular here at MM. As a matter of fact, he has been the most unbiased help. Since some of the other info varies wildly, I was wondering if any other members have hunted the Breaks, or have info that would help. I am exploring all options and welcome any response. mtmuley

Which area did you draw for? I drew for 632 and am looking forward to the hunt. I haven't hunted the area for elk yet but have spent some time hunting mulies over the last 10 years. When are you planning your hunt? Good luck.

HEY!!!!!! It just so happen that I am loading the mules and gear hope to be in the breaks on the 30th of August. Hunted they many times over the years, know it believe very well. Have taking a few nice 330 class with bow and seenbigger ones.
Boy I excited!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.
Be there soon!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I drew area 622, and my permit allows hunting on the CMR. It is a rifle permit and doesn't open until October 24. I would like to hear from any of you after your archery hunts. Thanks mtmuley

Dude, you have a dream permit! I dont know that area, but if you work hard and can semi field judge a bull, you ought to get a dandy! What type bull would you be satisfied with?

Ya know, I really dont know anyone that knows that unit. I think I would definitely be looking for a 360+ bull, but I also think it would be hard to pass on a 340 bull!! Depends on how much time you can spend in there.

I know one guy that flew it and hunted it all season a couple years ago and came out with a nontyp freaky 300 class bull. I would not have killed it, but he seemed happy.

Can you get there before the season to scout, I mean, the few days before? I think if I had any one of those breaks tag I'd spend 3-5 days before opening scouting and trying to locate a shooter, then be waiting for him Sunday morn. Things get tough fast after about 3 days of hunting....I hear.

Good luck

LAST EDITED ON Sep-06-04 AT 04:52PM (MST)[p]I may have two days before opening if I am lucky. I can't fly it, but I know of people that will. I can't afford to, and am not interested in taking a bull that way. I am going elk hunting, and if I take a brute, I will be that much happier. Don't get me wrong, I would love a book bull, it just seems that some of the methods and pressure of doing it, really takes the fun and enjoyment out of drawing this kind of permit. I dreamed about this opportunity. I hope I make the best of it. But regardless of the bull I harvest, I just want to hunt elk. mtmuley

HEY!!!!!!
Just got back from the breaks this AM, took a 381 bull, not counting the fraction. that now make 4 bulls over 320 i have taking, picture going to walmart this am, will post soon

LAST EDITED ON Sep-13-04 AT 06:26PM (MST)[p]bowedark, I am looking forward to the picture. I would be real interested in talking or e-mailing. I also sent you a pm. mtmuley

Congratulations on your permit,I have never drawn one yetmy brother had a permit two years ago he got excited and shot a bull that scored about 310 he shot it on opening morning, he talked to people that were camped in tthe area and they convinced him to shoot the first decent bull he saw they told him after opening morning all the bulls would be on private ground or out in the middle of fields where you couldnt get to them. I went back two weeks later with a friend who had a cow tag and seen a half a dozen bulls that would score above 320 with the biggest going about 370, way better bulls than we seen opening weekend. My cousin drew the same tag you have this year we are going to start scouting in a couple of weeks going everyweekend to see whats out there. In my opinion based on the three times I have hunted that area on opening weekend it is a complete zoo, I am trying to convince my cousin to wait a couple of weeks unless you have lots of time to hunt. Well good luck if i see anything worthy while scouting I will let you know.Craig

I agree it is a complete zoo. One nice thing for elk hunters is that the CMR is closed to deer hunters during the Muley Rut. So all the pressure on the borders of the CMR by deer hunters tends to push the elk onto the CMR and not on to just Private land.

I got back last week after spending 7 days hunting area 632. I did not take a bull, but was close to elk every day. It was my first trip elk hunting and was one of the most awesome experiences I've ever had. I saw some nice bulls but nothing huge. Like I said I saw elk every day and was within 70 yds each day but always had something go wrong. Anyway good luck with your hunt.

Sorry for the lapse in time for my reply. I was in 632. I'm hoping to get back to chase some mulies with a rifle. Good luck on your hunt.

Hello; I guess I am lucky #2 I also drew the 622 bull tag. I have been over on several occasions spotting and learning the area. Have seen numerous elk but nothing that would go 350 but I talked to game wardens over there and they said they were there. Myself I am going to try to hold out for a 350 or better. E-mail me or reply so we can talk, I am heading over a couple of days early, I am a little nervous about the weather; heard from a friend over there that they received snow and rain this past week and it is not looking good.

Your friend is correct the weather has been wet, cold and miserable. You will get know about the Missouri Breaks gumbo mud. My advice is if it is still wet don't attempt to drive on the roads as you have a good chance of sliding off into the ditch. The forecast I have seen is for more rain and snow through Thurs. and then things calm down.

You Lucky dog. That is the draw of a life time. I have hunted the area now for over 20-years and never drew a bull tag. Have had several cow tags and chased many deer. It is possible to get a 350+ bull if you are willing to do a lot and I mean a lot of hiking and getting away from the beaten path. I personally have seen bulls that would score in the high 380's and low 400's but no permit. There is a lot of open country out there and not a lot of cover. Plan on shooting anywhere from 300 yards and up. There is some timber but is thick and difficult to get on the elk. They generally are quite skiddish and will not hang around. You don't often get much of a chance look over a bull unless you are glassing from a mile away. Once they see you moving they are gone.

Also weather is a major factor as others have said. If you it is wet either snow or rain and the ground has not been frozen for a week or two. Don't plan on driving anywhere except on the main roads. That montana gumbo mud will suck you in faster than a hoover vaccum and you'll be stuck until spring.

Good luck

Walmart lost roll of pictures!!!!!!! These are not the best but give you a good idea 381 bull 6x7 55" spread 52" beams 19" G1 & G2, G3 16",G4 24",G5 12" and lots of mass unofficial measurements of course, with a bow on public land and with no guides by myself and over 1700 miles from home that now makes for Bulls over 320 with bow. Not a bad looking mule to.

Well shot my bull in 622 opening morning, gross scored 350 as a 6x6. Seen two others that would have broke the 400 mark, however I am very pleased with my bull and best of luck to you. The big ones are definitely out there.

Breaksbull, I returned on Sunday. I could have taken 320 to 350 class bulls on my hunt. I saw bulls in that range every day. I hope I didn't mess up, but I am going back on the 22nd. Congrats on your bull. Where did you hunt? Any pictures? Feel free to send a PM. mtmuley

Whoever's bull that is on the back of the horse is awesome! Thanks for sharing, how about a story?! Jeff

mtmuley,

I just got back from my elk hunt at no-tellum creek in 622 and shot a good 8x9 bull. I saw many others one that would score more than the stud I shot. I am not dissappoionted at all. Hope you get yours. Can't say if you made a mistake or not, but I do know that the hunting pressure as the season goes along may make the elk harder to find.

I'll post some pics when I get time.
