I got my first elk yesterday. It was a spike. I could not have cared less, this is my first elk ever. I will post pics as soon as the film comes back form Wal-Mart.

Crazy:

Theres nothing like your first elk. Big horns are nice, but they're not everything. Nice going and bring on the pics!

Congrats on that first Elk and the best part is what you will be eating, good, tender steaks. Enjoy and waiting for the pictures.
Which state were you hunting in?

Crazy, I cant wait to see the pictures.......CONGRATS........... Allen Taylor......

Carefull this addiction is more powerful then drugs. I'm headded to hog park next weekend and have been counting the days tell bowseason ever sence the last day of bowhunting last year.
nothing better then bugling elk.
except a monster muley maybe?
or is it a tossup?
make sure your wife understands this behavior is not all your fault.

My first elk was a spike as well, 1985. Learned right then adn there that "There is no such thing as a small elk". Jim Zumbo wrote an article with that as a title.. The best part of a spike is the meat: none better. I have had cow, old bull, young bull, and lots of deer and moose etc... nothing can compare to fresh spike bull elk. congratulations.

For the record, a spike will weigh right about 200-250 pounds field dressed. so even taking out in two trips is a hard day.. we bone out now... still two trips with a backpack.

Congrats! Nothing like the 1st one ;) My 1st was a cow and then I got a couple spikes.

This might sound funny but take that spike and bleach the skull out. I did that with mine and I have it hung proud on my wall.

The 1st one is the hardest.

Congrats on your bull! I also started with a spike and have added a few cows, spikes, and branched bulls to the list. I think arrowing an elk is one of the ultimate experiences! Congrats and enjoy those steaks! They should be great eating. Someone else already said it but the first one is the hardest, good luck in the future.
