I just lost a bet with my buddy and it seems that I have to plan and pay for a self guided do it yourself Elk hunt in '05 or '06 :-(.The problem lies in that we are from Virginia and neither of us has hunted Elk before.Any help from the experts on this site would be greatly appreciated. We are not looking for a monster bull just a chance at a good quality bull.I have 6 Prefrence points in Colorado and have been applying in Az.,Nv. and Ut. for the last 6 years. My buddy has no point anywhere.

Well, I'm not the worlds greatest elk hunter but I could help you out a little bit in Idaho.

What are you going to do-archery, rifle or muzzle loader?

Pickup camp, backpack or horseback?

There are several options in Idaho for all of the above with "over the counter" (read no drawing) tags for non-residents.

I would help if I can.

IF you put in a draw with your buddy, all your precious preference points are at needless risk: As a group application, the lowest preference points on the applicant rule.. and if you win, then all your preference points are lost,, so if you are going for your first choice, that is OK < cause you want to win anyway, but if you dump down to a real easy draw area, to make sure you can hunt,, then your preference points accumyulation lose future value for a trophy area.

Best to buy over counter tags and pay off your bet, or put in for the same spots you would have anyway, knowing that your chance of drawing are back to zip nada baseline zero preference points..

just a thought

Based on the cost of paying off this bet, my advice would be avoid betting in the future. :)
