hello all...im heading to colorado next year for my first elk hunt and i need help with clothing...i need suggestions on what to wear from my undies to outerwear...dont want to go out and make a bad mistake..any suggestions will be greatly appreciated..

Don't wear orange coveralls, it makes you look like an idiot to the locals

Lane,
Where do you live now back East? Go to the main Forum page, look over to the left side and there is a long list of options there. Click on the HuntList and pick and choose accordingly as to the time of year you plan on going.
Remember you are in the Rockies and you can have cool to warm mornings and before night the weather can change really fast if a storm comes in.
A orange cap and vest are required in CO.

Good luck.

Brian

Dress in layers like you would for any normal outing (maybe I am assuming that you know what normal is for Colorado elk season?) and wear what the law requires for orange.

D13er gives some good fashion advice... funny stuff!
I'd opt for shorts, a picture from last week when it was 70 degrees at 11,000 feet.

Orange camo coveralls and anything that says "Buckmasters" on it should do the trick. Don't forget the faux fur orange hat and matching gloves. Just teasin' a bit...sorry Yeah...you'll need to layer up for that type of country. My Dad had a good trick he used in Alaksa. If you've got some old sweatshirts and T-shirts pack them along. Each day as the temperature grows you just discard them as you peel off layers, then burn 'em up in a little campfire so you don't leave clothes all over the mountain. Next morning...put a fresh batch of "old" new clothes and...rinse and repeat.

Got a 300+ bull and a 180+ buck 2 days apart. 29 wide, 25 tall. Big arse G-2s (19+) and 12 inch 3s. Nice couple days in the Colorado hills. Pics later....

LAST EDITED ON Sep-20-04 AT 12:24PM (MST)[p]Way to go man! Doesn?t get any better than that. I had the opportunity to hunt with my cousin this past weekend. Utah offers a youth any bull hunt which he fortunately he drew this year. No elk when I was with them, of course. But I got the call a little while ago that he connected on a 330" six point this morning. He?s sixteen years old and his first elk! If I would have known he was skipping classes today, I would have called in sick. Oh well, I'm looking forward to stretching a tape on it this after noon. :D

Only 25 days 18hours and 50minutes until CO?s second rifle season. Can?t wait! I think I'm going to go nuts if it doesn't hurry up!

You can wear just about anything.
Just remember that elk only see in black and white, but if you are going to wear brand new clothes, go to Wal Mart and pick up some NO UV detergent. Wash them at least 2 times in this stuff to remove the phosphates in the clothing. Just make sure your clothing has some breakup so you are allowed at least some movement when the animals are in the area.
See phosphate to elk is like a flashlight to us, They see only black and white but the phosphate stands out ALOT more so it will be a darker black to a real light gray to them so they can spot you real easy.
Scent killer is another thing I would recommend.
Good luck on your hunt!
