Any reports on how the rut is going in some units? I have heard reports from 10 that the rut is just getting started, as far as bulls (big bulls) gathering cows. I was in 5bn for the first archery week and they started off screamin and hot but when the storm came in it shut things down pretty good. How goes the rest of the state?

I spent the first archery week near chevelon canyon lake and many bulls were just beginning to herd up cows towards the end of the week. Most of the bulls we called in were alone, and the few groups of cows that we saw had no bulls (besides spikes) with them. Aside from that, they were screaming and were quite receptive to calling. Storm didnt really seem to affect them much.

Hey Bugler, I was in unit 1 for an archery cow hunt starting on 9/17. The storm seemed to just turn them on more over there.... By the end of the long weekend, I was seeing bulls with cows gathered-up already. This was one week ago, so the information is a little stale at this point.

PS: Are you still planning on trying to make it to our youth camp in 36 in November? Let me know.... we can use all the help we can get! ;-)

Last night in unit 7, I saw about 70 elk in a basin, including about half a dozen 6x6's. They were bugling up a chorus, following the cows around, but no sparring.

This morning, I was out in 6A helping another hunter. They were bugling constantly, every 5 minutes at least, till noon, moving with the cows, but not coming in to our calls much, as we only had a cow and a 2x2 come in to within 20 yards. Heard two bulls clashing antlers, but didn't get to see the fight. We covered some territory following the herd.
