This is my wife's first animal of any kind. She made a nice shot with her muzzleloader after we cow-called the bull to around 40 yards. As you can tell it was a great family adventure, thanks for looking, God bless. Mike

Nice bull! Congrats to your wife! Nice country too. I wish I had some horses...and about 300 acres...maybe if I win the Powerball!

Congrats again and thanks for posting the nice pics.

Congrats to your wife, thats a great bull, espcially for her first, it isn't supposed to be that easy ;) BTW those are some fine looking ponyies too! Thanks for shareing

Congrats to your wife on a fine Bull, a real nice trophy for being her first. If only some of us could be as lucky as she was. Must have been the "guide" who help make it possible.
Great pictures by the way.

There seems to be 2 versions of this hunt, mine and my bride's. The part we agree on is that opening morning we rode about 3 miles to our hunt area (we didn't even start riding until it was light out!). We stopped near an area I had seen bulls in previous years and got off the horses to explore. We heard some bugles as we started hiking and this is where our stories differ:

MY VERSION: We walked briskly at a pace appropriate to intercepting the herd. Yes, there was a slight incline not unlike a hilly park.
HER VERSION: We RAN up a MOUNTAIN for 1 1/2 miles.

Once again we agree for a moment...the initial herd we were following didn't work out. We had a opportunity at a small bull which she passed. Other bulls were bugling so we followed them. I blew a cow call, got an immediate reply, closed the gap and when he bugled again he was close! AT this point we again digress:

MY VERSION: With incredible, almost superhuman patience I gently point out that a large bull elk is about ready to crawl into her pocket and that if it's not too much trouble she should get her gun ready to shoot. Kindly aim at that gap the cow elk just walked through and when the bull follows (in the next few seconds) I, as a loving caring husband will blow on my cow-call, stop the bull and allow you to carefully place a accurate shot.
HER VERSION: I believe her exact words were that I was "snippy", somehow "hissing" at her "shoot"! Clearly my bride suffered some sort of altitude-related oxygen deprivation induced pychosis. We are praying for her rapid recovery, at least in time for next years hunt!

Congratulations on the fine Bull. Nice family hunt. That Bull should make a fine trophy for all of you to look at fondly and remember your hunt. Enjoy!

I believe your wife, just because she is a hell of a lot easier to look at. What i think i would really like to hear is Matt's opinion (the lucky son)

been there and done that....ya did good 'mr. snippy'..congratulations to your wife, and of course, yourself...thanks for sharing the story and the pics

Just took my wife to the Valles Caldera for a cow hunt. We had an awesome time. Bulls bugling constantly. I was in the VV last fall for the same timeframe. Both hunts are the best!!!! Zia, as you know, guiding your wife is the biggest challenge of all. I loved the snippy part. No doubt if your marriage can survive a hunt, your life long pals. Congrats to both of you.

7th kid!!! You need to get away hunting more often. It sound like you are together too much.

Just kidding. Congrats

Congrats on a great hunt ! I loved both versions , still laughing as in her version put me right there in the mountain with you .... Thanks for sharing .....NMhuntnutt
