Congrats, Schmalts. That's a beautiful bull. I remember when you drew the tag, people hammered on me for saying that what Valle Vidal lacks in monster bulls, it makes up for it in the overall experiece. What do you think after being up there?

Congrats PJ,

Nice Bull you got there along with a "little added bonus" in the back ground there. Enjoy the steaks, chops, burgers, sausage, jerky etc.

I wondered if you would notice.. yea he almost impaled himself on it when he fell.
NM Taxi, most of those guys were full of crap, this was a baby and i shouldnt have shot it. Maybe its because we were hunting way off the beaten path or it was the 8-12 miles a day but we saw 340-370 bull every day. Most guys said they never seen anything over 330. they are definitly there if you put on the miles. I took home 6 sheds total

Awesome! I have been waiting to see your pics, great! 340-370 bulls every day is awesome. Heck I am still in awe by 280 bulls. How was the terrain (roughness) compared to last years hunt?

You have to share the story, or at least shoot me your phone number again so we can talk.

Congrats on a great looking bull! Sounds like there were a lot of bign's out there. Dont short sell yourself with that beaut though... any bull taken fair chase with archery tackle is a super trophy in my book, and thats much nicer than just "any" bull.

Pman
About time you put some pictures up! Again, good job on the nice bull, sounds like a super hunt. Congrats

Schmalts-Fine bull and congrats on a good shot there. I am stuck with a rag bull tag on the res here but at least I am getting to bowhunt. I was surprised that you are actually a lot younger than I thought but much uglier.:D

Donv, The terrain was variable depending on where you were in the unit. We hit the nasty stuff the first couple days but found the same quality in the flatter counrty as well, so it was a no-brainer to stick in the easier terrain. With the limited tags, and 95% of the guys staying in the campground VS spiking out like we did we never saw another hunter in the woods. They were in out area once in a while by the horse tracks told us, but we never saw any. I would like to tell one story, We nailed a nice 6pt and when we found it the next day some loser took everything off it and hid the carcass under rocks and branches so we didnt find it.It still only had the one lung hit hole, and no other. We hiked out and hit the campground and asked a lot of questions and everyone told us about a guy from WY that brought a 6pt in the same day and left in a hurry. If anyone knows who this may have been please contact me. He even took the cape, he will be real proud to hang that one on the wall.... The warden is also interested in checking DNA on the rack and comparing it to the carcass. I have video of the carcass, and the bull getting shot by my buddy. If we get the rack back thats all we want. This guy rode through our camp area and knew we were back there, he could have asked us if we were looking before taking everything. Because it was 80 degrees we know he found it the day we got it because he took the meat as well. not very sportsman like.

Schmalts that sucks about your buddies elk. I once had a phesant stolen, hid in a nearby treestand since I had no game bag, guy had his kid climb the tree to get it out (no steps). Not quite like an elk but it is amazing what jerks are out there.

Got a video of a guy who shot a huge moose in Canada and had the rack stolen, got it back though!

Good luck with that, at least he has the memories.

Unreal this guy stole an elk when he had a VV tag! Go get your own!

Schmalts congrats on the bull. sounds like you had a good time. I sure hope that you catch the jerk who stole your buddies bull.

Since I was the only wyoming license plate, you must be talking about me, and I don't appreciate the insinuation that I "took" your bull. I killed a nice 6x7 and it was not the elk you shot. Also, I did not leave in a hurry. It took me 3 trips to pack out my bull, and because of the heat, I left to get my meat on ice asap. I hunted on foot and did not see another hunter in the places I hunted. This is the second post that I have read that you implied that the hunter from wyoming took your bull, and I don't appreciate it.

You got a guilty conscience? I doubt seriously you were the only guy in the whole unit with a Wyoming license plate. Big area. Don't think he pointed a finger at you personally

First off,I said 6pt not 6x7, . what campground were you in? did you hide the carcass? if not, dont worry about it, and yes you may have not been the only one there from that state and i am trying to find out more, so dont be so offended unless your feeling guilty, there was 35 hunters. it was also killed on the 12th if i remember right. Heres the carcass, do you have any info?.on that day and the next no one recalled seeing a 6pt brought in but one person. There was very few hunters spiking out and no one else in our area spiking because they would have parked at the same place because of the designated parking spots. That said it was pretty sure the person was staying in the campgrounds. And we are pretty sure he was on a horse by the tracks. it would have taken more than a day to make 3 trips to where we were if a guy had a load of meat on his back on foot. Sorry if you feel singled out but I am going on what we found out. unless you checked both campgrounds for a WY plate dont feel like your accused. congrats on your elk, how about a picture? I could tell everyone for sure that it is not the same bull if your feeling like your being accused, like i said, i got it all on video. I am just trying to find out the truth, sorry you live in the same state.

Why would I have a guilty conscience?? With only 35 bow tags and 2 campgrounds and I didn't see another Wyo license, why would I not think that fingers were pointed? Don't point the blame unless it can be backed up. I had a great hunt, and took a nice bull, its too bad things like this happen and taint hunts. It does not reflect the respect and courtesy that most bowhunters show for other bowhunters.

No offense taken. Just don't want to play the blame game with anyone. I will post a pix once I download it from camera. From the looks of it, someone went through great measures to hide the evidence. I only heard of 1 other bull taken and it was a small 5 taken by a hunter out of cimmaron CG who used a guide. I killed my bull on the 10th and was staying in McCrystal. The only hunters I saw with horses were in Mccrystal and looked like they were outfitted, but the campground hosts did not know if they were an outfitter or not. There were many folks "just horsebacking" or scouting with horses for later hunts.

I hunted the "flats" off of the loop road and killed my bull about 2.5 miles up a drainage to the west. There was a bigger bull with the one I killed but didn't see him til after I arrowed my bull. During the tracking and packing the other bull was very near bugling all evening and the next morning. Tough trailing job even though I had a good kill shot. I found the bull 5 hours after hit and ended up losing about 25% of the front shoulders due to the heat. My bull had 2 bullets wounds from previous rifle seasons, one in the leg and one in the back.

On Sat. the 11th I took a drive from to the east of the campground and saw 3 nice 6x6's at the windmills near the road east of Mccrystal near Hart Canyon. They were good bulls and one was within 200 yards of parked rig. One thing that bothered me was the lack of presence for G&F or even the Forest Service. With such a high quality unit you think they would have at least made a drive through?

Congrats on the bull and I hope you have luck on lost bull investigation.

Yes there was not much for F&G but one would hope they dont need to have to be around check these things. At first our biggest concern was someone without a tag took it, and if we went out to the campgrounds it could be retrieved fast. But we gambled and lost hunting time instead. The warden didnt come out because of truck trouble. he said he would do an investigation later. there is a possibility someone came in off of the next unit over, because it was lying within a mile or less of the border, but dont know why someone would hunt out of thier unit that far but hey, if they steal an elk why not?
the picture tells a thousand words, no doubt they didnt shoot it or even finish off a wounded elk. they knew they were wrong and we were looking. If the person that did does read this, i have one word... L-O-S-E-R

What was your take on the unit? I found elk, but because of the heat, they were bedding up pretty quickly. I hunted the Valles Caldera last year with muzzleloader and it was a start contrast. Many more elk, but like fishing in a hatchery. I had a much more enjoyable hunt in the Valle Vidal. I never saw a bull over 340, so you must have been in a pretty good spot.

Yes we were in a good area, but truth is we saw at least a 340 in a different area too. We were in a area that had a lot of large herds, and large herd bulls passing through. Hard to get to them with a bow since it was sparse cover with those cows all around them. I was told this area does not come close to most AZ units, on that note.... AZ must be a zoo. Hope to find out some day. I think it was Zim who hunted this unit and the book cliffs in UT, and either 1 or 10 in az. He said the Vadal was like the book cliffs and the AZ hunt was crazy with bigger bulls, and the elk had less fear of humans.
all i can say is it was a hunt to remember. I got good pictures, good video, 6 sheds, a good bull, and it was a riot to hunt.

One question....How do you know for sure it was your buddies elk that was taken??? I'm just curious since you said you found the carcass the next day.....could be someone shot a bull besides your buddies?? Just wondering.....Very nice bull by the way!!!!!

LAST EDITED ON Oct-07-04 AT 03:14PM (MST)[p]Well, for one, and most important, who hides a carcass after all the tireing work involved in taking everything if you shot it yourself and have nothing to hide? 2, the hole in the side was in the exact spot as in the video i took, 3 it was in the same area and there were very few hunters if any at all most days there but us, 4 it was killed the same day because it was still fresh. What else do you need?
Cmon, after seeing the hide job, why would you even doubt he killed it himself.... Hmmmm Gil_wy would you be from Wyoming?

Easy killer.....I was just asking if it was a possibility nothing more, nothing less.......Oh I get it....I'm from Wyoming so I must have done it, right? Sorry, never been to NM but if you need someone to blame.....Jeez, sorry I said anything......Again nice bull.....

It was just a question i though was odd, after seeing the pictures i think most anyone would doubt it was killed by someone who actually did it legal or ethicle.

OK, have my pix on disk. How do you post on this site? Any help is greatly appreciated.

The reason I asked is because I made the same accusation once many years ago....probably with even more reasons to believe it was taken but I ended up COMPLETELY wrong....almost got in a fist fight over it at the carcass and lo and behold my buddies elk was dead about a 100 yards further down the mountain. Nearly identical circumstances.

These are the most common types of pix I take, and I have wondered how, if you hunt alone, the best way to take pix and get the hunter in the pix also. Does anyone have a source for a lightweight field tripod??

I have put a tape on this bull and he measures right around 300. Good mass, but hurt on main beam length and spread.

Thats it!!! You stealer!!.. Just kidding... nice bull though.
Try what i did, i stack a buch of logs or lean a log by a tree to set the camera on. Then use the self timer. sometimes i cradle the camera in my fanny pack to use to get it level.
the pictures i posted were taken that way, too bad the shadows were so bad on my pictures but you cant move the sun.
