No horn soup but just some mighty fine elk steak. Little 5x5 bull from Colorado on evening of opening day. Public land.

Thanks guys. All I was wanting was a freezer full of steak
and he fit the bill nicely. At about 40 yrds I wasnt going
to pass. It was a pretty good evening as it went. My Girlfriend
who has never hunted or been exposed to it was with me. That
afternoon before we left she said she wanted to hear one bugle
cuz she thought that was soooooooo neat! I had seen this bull
a couple of nights before so decided to see if he was still
hanging around the same area. We had a bit of a hike to get to
where I wanted to be. About 100 yds before we got to the rock
I like to glass from I spotted a cow and calf about 600 yds up
the mountain. We stopped and I showed her where they were and
let her look at them for a bit. I told her I wanted to get to the rock to just be slow and quiet. No sooner started walking
again and spotted a third cow. Finally made it to the rock and
just as we were getting the packs off I heard a bugle from below
us in the Aspens. There is a little pond in there that they really use this time of year and I knew the bugle came from there. Its so thick in there its hard to see to far so I thought
our best bet was to stay on the ridge and see if I could cow call
him our way. He was pretty fired up, every time I would cow call he would scream back and I could tell he was working his way to us. I moved down the ridge about 50 yds to keep the wind in our favor. Couple of minutes later I could hear brush popping and out comes a spike at about 20 yds. Gf was taking pics and he was
just posing for her but I was worried he was going to blow out and spook the bull that was still coming behind him. LOL Little bugger just stood there. Finally I could hear brush again and spikey was looking back getting nervous. When he turned to leave he no sooner got out of sight I could see horns coming uphill through the brush. His fatal mistake was at 40 yds he stopped and lowered his head to look under a branch. Well I might not be able to hit em at 600 but at 40 yds a forehead is plenty big enough for me.
There are some other pics I will post later of the packout. My brother took a couple of young colts that had never been packed before in to bring him out for me. Not even a good wreck to report but we did get some pretty pics of him loaded for the trip home.
