Speaking of waterholes...

I have a question - in your experiences, do elk use stock tanks more early in the morning, or in the evening? Is it better to setup over a tank before sunrise or sunset, or does it make a difference?

Thanks,

KP

LAST EDITED ON Oct-18-04 AT 01:16PM (MST)[p]Elk use stock tanks in evening. Just make sure you setup early between 3 and 4 pm. Also little or no movement while sitting. Bulls will if they can find a look out point and survey the scene. If they see something they don't like they will wait or go somewhere else. Treestands work good because they seldom look up. Still hunt mornings and use calls. They are still very vocal. Had hunters last Tuesday in which we where in between 6 bulls. Did not score because of fog. As far as the tanks had a hunter sat on a tank Sunday the 10th and he scored on a good 6 X 6. All in unit 2 NM.

Good Luck

30 inch is correct. However, if you have elk bugling and moving around you but don't come in they are very likely to come in the very next morning. My friends have killed several returning in the morning after a vocal evening when they haven't watered. I prefer the evenings myself. Much better and more likely for action. Have a great day.

The only problem with evenings is running out of light at the end of the day, especially if you have to pack the elk out, field dress, etc.

My wife and I will be hunting for cow elk this week. The bugling in our unit has all but stopped for now. Even though the rut is basically over, there will be some cows who haven't gone into estrus, and a few willing bulls out there.

Anyone have an experience taking an elk in the morning near a tank during the rifle season?

Evenings seem to work fine.

FYI on water holes, if you hear a sound like a bark, you've been busted. I heard that this year, I thought it was a dog at first then relized it was elk.
