This thing with USO isn't over yet. I hope the only reason everything has settled down about it is because everybody is out hunting. I plan to write letters to all of my House and Senate Reps., both state and national. Also, I plan to write to every outdoor magazine I can. I hope I don't have to do this alone. I am asking everybody to join me, and lets get something done about what USO did in AZ. Let's force the AZGFD to give residents an advantage. And for all of you who will give me crap about this, you will fell the same way when YOU DO NOT HAVE RESIDENT ADVANTAGE IN YOUR STATE. Notice how I mention WHEN, not IF. It is just a matter of time. I am asking all AZ residents who want to stop USO to please write Jon Kyle and John McCain as well as others who are in the House of Reps. Also, please write to your local representatives in the state Senate and House. Lets get the ball rolling or this could be very well the last greatest hunting season in the West. I gaurantee that as soon as this years seasons are over, USO will be back at it trying to do to other states what they did to AZ. Lets stop them before they can get it done, and at the same time fix what they did to AZ. HELP. I hope I am not the only one who feels this way.

Senator Reid of Nevada and I believe Burns of Montana have filed S 2978 in the US senate. This legislation would exempt state wildlife permits from the interstate commerce clause, thus making void the Taulman law suit.

I strongly support non-resident hunting, guiding and outfitting. However, Taulman's suit was one of the worst things that could happen to wildlife and hunting.

I will be in DC next week talking with many US senators about supporting this S 2978 and slaming the door closed on selfish USO. There is a fundraiser for Utah Senator Hatch, I will be there talking to many Senators, especially those from Wyoming, Idaho, Utah and Alaska that I know.

Every sportsmen who cares about having long term and abundant wildlife herds shoudl support, and ask your legislators to support this law change

This past Sunday Oct. 7th I had the TV on but was reading Sunday paper more when USO "Real Hunting" program came on. Left it there so I could see advertisements and there was nothing till the end of the program. ONLY saw one (1) sponser and that was "WIDEYES PRODUCTS".

Don and others. There is alot of emails hitting me regarding the Senate bill. I have some form letters that should be sent out by all sportsmen to their respective legislators, senators etc....if anyone is interested. All of the AZ organizations are sending letters/emails to McCain etc./all and trying to ensure all western states help push this through. Hopefully this bill is easily passed and protects states hunting rights. The alternative will be the end to Quality Hunting in many western states...........shoot me an email if anyone wants me to forward form letters......... Thanks, Allen Taylor......

I was advised that the best way to get your letters to your reps is to fax or email. They need the by the 16th of November and if they go to Washington by regular mail they will never see thme in time due to the anthrax screening.

I found this form letter on the NDOW's we site. I'll be sending a few of these off myself

Dear Senator :

I write to respectfully urge that you strongly support S2978, introduced by Senator Reid (NV) on October 11, 2004. This bipartisan bill affirms the states? right to regulate access to hunting and fishing, and is needed to redress a recent Ninth Circuit decision which is contrary to years of case law.
In many States hunting pressure is such that conservation of big game animals (in particular) requires that a limit be placed on the number of permits issued annually. As you well know, successful wildlife management also depends heavily on the support of state residents and land owners and the assistance of volunteers. The unprecedented decision of the Ninth Circuit, reported under the name Conservation Force, Inc. v. Manning, 301 F.3d 985 (9th Cir. 2002), cert. denied, 537 U.S. 1112 (2003), concludes that recreational hunting substantially affects interstate commerce and that resident/nonresident differentials must therefore be strictly scrutinized by federal courts.
By subjecting to strict scrutiny analysis under the dormant Commerce Clause Arizona?s preference for residents in allocating permits for recreational hunting of species highly prized by hunters, the Ninth Circuit decision strikes at the ability of States to maintain the level of local sacrifice and contributions necessary to manage big game successfully at sustainable levels. The Ninth Circuit decision undermines resident preference in controlled hunts in twenty-six other States, and it undermines as well recreational hunting fee differentials in nearly all States upheld by the Supreme Court against constitutional challenges (Privileges and Immunities and Equal Protection Clauses in Baldwin v. Fish and Game Comm?n of Montana, 436 U.S. 371 (1978). S2978 effectively remedies the Ninth Circuit decision by renouncing Congressional interest in regulating access to hunting and fishing.

Thank you for your consideration of our position on this significant issue. I respectfully request that you advise Senator Reid of your support for S2978, and please don't hesitate to contact me should you have any questions.

Fellow Sportsmen,

the best way to get this done, is to have built a personal relationship with Senators and Congresman in each state. It is not that hard to do.

SFW Idaho Executive Director Nate Helm, who used to be Sen. Craig of Idaho's staff has today nailed down Idaho's entire delegation.

SFW Utah has had personal contact with both Utah Senators and 2 of the 3 congrssman today.

SFW Wyoming has been charged to get Wyoming done by the end of this week.

SFW New Mexico is working on it.

IF each western state is organized, and participate in the process, you would be amazed at what can be done - soon.

We don't need to send emails, etc, our folks know who we are. Sportsmen have held fundraisers for them in our houses with our friends, they have been to many of our fundraising events. they respect our hunting and conservation efforts, and know how important this is.

This is a classic case that shows the value of having sportsmen organized in each state, and involved in the process that determines all habitat protection and hunting laws and policies.

Glad to help you all get your states set up

When you say USO, are you refering to United States outfitter? If so, I am never going to watch their program again!
