Hello,

I have a Dec bull tag fo AZ unit 23 and up east of Payson in the northern section of the unit it sure looks different from the country I'm used to hunting in SW Colorado. Much thicker timber and a whole lot steeper. I was up there last weeked and saw some sign but nothing to fresh. Anyone willing to point this flatlander in the right direction? Not looking for anyones honey holes, just some general advice.

Thanks,

John

Going north through Christopher Creek it will be the 3-right (fire road) take that back about 4 miles and you will come into one of the most awsome clear cuts you have ever seen. It is the back side of colcord mountain and the name is the hells canyon. Killed some nice turkeys and missed some BIG cous deer. Used to be great mule deer country. I applied for that unit every year I lived in AZ. Good luck! Email me if you need more info lucky dog!

I think most of your bigger bulls aren't going to be that high in Dec. I would head south toward Hagler Creek. I had the Nov. archery hunt in 23 a couple years ago and during the rut it was great up north. But when the rut is over the bulls start heading for the canyons. And if you want to pack in and get away from everyone else you can go into the Hellsgate Wilderness area. There are some in there. And you won't see anyone else. Good luck

Thanks for all the responses guys.

How about the Canyon Creek area next to the reservation? Or down south around Armer Mountain? Christopher Mountain? Horse Mountain?

Timberhost, we are just looking to fill our tags. Between my father, brother and myself we have only taken two bulls in the five years we have been chasing them. Should we be looking for clear cuts or water holes or what? The timber seems pretty thick to glass far distances in the northern section of the area.

Again thanks to all that replied.

John
