utah muzz success

I haven't heard many good tales about the general muzz hunt-either spike or any bull- other than bigbullhunter's. I thought I'd hear more results, but since nobody else is talking, I'll tell my results. My buddy got a 304 gross six point and I got lucky on a 355 gross five by six-I can't stop grinning. these were both public ground northern utah bulls. not too shabby for a general tag that didn't use up any bonus points. three of my buddies that got spike tags all are eating tag soup this year.
before the hunt we called the division and they told us that 8900 any bull tags went to muzz hunters this year. somebody else out there had to get lucky, so let's hear it.

Way to go Clint!

How come you haven't sent me some pics yet? x(

Shoot me an email. We need to catch up, and I've got some questions for ya. How did you do on the ML deer this year?

I did send you the pics, check your email. I just resent them. They don't do the mass on the big boy any justice.
During the muzz hunt I spent 6 hours on my belly within 150 yards of the buck I'd been scouting all summer, I never had a good shot and I let him walk. He was about 28" not including a kicker off his rear fork that created a big tripod. I sent my buddy in after him during the rifle hunt and he thought he got him, but it turned out to be a 32 1/2" buck that I'd never seen in all my scouting.
I also took my wife out during the muzz deer hunt up in the general area of your land. I didn't get to glass much after she found a 330 bull to watch. She had her eyes glued to the spotter all evening watching him trash tree after tree.
Have you had that kid yet? I still don't know what you were thinking, fooling around nine monthe before the hunt. :)

Yeah we had him on 10/28. We named him Jacob Bruce (my wife liked Jacob, and Bruce is my father's name). I'm still wondering what the hell I was doing as well. I'll send you some pics as soon as I get my computer up and running again (after the move). I'll shoot you an email if I don't receive the pics. Congrats again man!

LAST EDITED ON Nov-17-04 AT 08:56AM (MST)[p]I had a spike tag and I am not eating tag soup this year. I spent Saturday hiking and scouting out an area that usually holds a few elk. I took my buddy and his boy along and I think the extra noise did not help us out, because we only saw I big bull and that was it. On Sunday we went to another area that was higher only to find more snow and no elk sign at all. So that night I went back to the area I hunted on Saturday and got a good vantage point setup the the spotting scope and just glassed. Finially I started to pickup up the elk. 1st I saw 2 lone bulls that were decent bulls (remember I only have a spike tag), then I found another group of bulls on the top of the mountain. At first I could only see 5 bulls, four good bulls and 1 rag horn. I kept my eye on them as I continued to scan the mountain side. It was getting dark so I decided to check on the group of bulls again and low and behold there was a spike in the group that had came out of the trees. So the next morning I woke up early and hiked the back side of the mountain to get on the top of the them and hoping that they did not move far. Monday morning brought the winds and rain but I keep on pushing. I reached the top where I wanted to be. After sitting for 20 minutes and almost getting blown off the top i decided to head for a patch of Mountain Mahoganies for some shelter to let the storm blow off. Here I found a 7 point elk drop that made my day. After a while I looked back on the top of the hill and a spotted a elk. Pulled out the spotting scope and recongized the bull as the rag horn that was in the group so I knew that the spike had to be with them. So I hiked back up the hill and snuck over the ridge to the exact same spot I setup at first thing in the morning. I glassed down and there they were 100 yrds away including the spike. I quickly got in postion and fired and it just looked at me and started to walk away. I quickly reloaded now he was close to 200 yrd and I knew I had one more chance so I let it roar and down it went. Lucky he was higher then me so it hit high when it came out and caught his back so he was down for good.
It was a fun and eventfull hunt.

Here is a picture of the shed I found that my boys are holding.

i was also successful on the muzzleloader elk hunt. i had a spike only tag also. i hunted saturday (opening day). first thing i spotted was a herd of seventeen mature bulls. the biggest being a 340 class 6x7. later in the day i saw two more big bulls. that evening i found a herd that contained two spikes. i tried to get on them, but i ran out of day light. i wasn't able to hunt again until thursday. that day i found a herd of elk that had one spike. i hunted these elk most of the day, but was not able to get a shot at the spike. about 3:00 pm i went to the top of a hill and started glassing and immediatly found another herd of elk. they were too far away to tell if there was any spikes, so i headed over there too find out. when i got over there the elk were gone. it was snowing very hard and i figured they had headed for the trees. i started hunting through the trees when i saw some cows feeding through the trees towards a big open flat. about thay time i spotted a small bull. when i finally got a look at his antlers i spotted a forked antler. i thought he was an illegal bull, but when i got a better look i could see he was a 1x2. as long as he is a spike on one side he is legal. they were only sixty yards but i couldn't get a good shot because of the trees and the other elk. i worked my way to the edge of the clearing and when he stepped clear of everything i let him have it. he ran about 100 yards then piled up. i was amazed at the size of his body. i have killed alot of spikes, but this elk was alot bigger that any of them. i love hunting elk with my muzzleloader.
