MT Extends Elk Season 2 Weeks

Headin to Montana this weekend... for deer or elk. Not sure why they want to manage to harvest so much for elk . Alot are on private land where they can't be killed... why manage public lands the same. Let private lands have too many and let them keep them, (tough) they will spill over, block management will take care of it if they choose to incorporate it. This just whacks more public land elk.

Leasing it out?, TOUGH, you have too many elk on your land now, quit complaining and open it up to block management.

Montana has really been the place to go for big bulls over the last 5 years, but it has been progressively worse each year. More leases, more private land bought up, etc. Expect alot of giant bulls to be whacked in the last week... Maybe thats good, The general public will actually have a chance at big bulls.

In the breaks I've seen less and less giant bulls over the last 5 years. Sounds like Montana (ranchers) doesn't want them on public land. Too bad... counts should be made on huntable lands. The cow permits right now are outofhand, and have no consideration of whats on public land (huntable) vs. private.

LAST EDITED ON Nov-26-07 AT 08:53AM (MST)[p]Maybe you should check and see what units are open before you paint with your broad brush... The majority of the units that are extended have huge chunks of public land.

Also you're crutch of not killing an elk because they're all on private land, speaks volumes about your ability... ;)

Hey, I'm just a lousy bowhunter when it comes to trying to kill giant bulls.. And yes private/leased land is a huge factor right now in montana elk management.
Montana has been saying they have too many elk for the last several years....
I think a great way to lower montana elk numbers, would be to make your deer tag usable as a 2nd cow tag for areas they want to reduce the numbers in. I'd could have used mine...
But then again I like seeing good numbers and wouldn't want to reduce them, but that's just me.

LAST EDITED ON Nov-30-07 AT 08:23AM (MST)[p]I know a rancher who put a high fence around 4000 acres to keep the elk out. He hates elk, doesn't want them on his place, doesn't want to feed them.

Yes there are a lot of elk on private land, but it pretty complicated. Much of MT has been bought by animal loving do-gooders who just don't want to see anything killed. And its only getting worse and more complicated for F&G. I think they are doing what they can with what they have.

I think you want a cow bad enough to can get one.
