Here are a couple pictures of my archery bull that I took in 2000. I spent nearly 14 days straight chassing this bull and two others just waiting for one of them to present a shot. Several times I was with in 10-20 yards of this bull but could not get a shot off for one reason or another. I was finaly able to connect on him after he came in to the water hole that I had been watching. He only ran 50 yards befor coming to his final rest spot. It was by fare the most exciting hunt I've been on todate.

What do you guys think he'll score? I have put the tape measure to him and came up with an unofficale score. Before I post the score lets see what you guys think he'll score. I have found it harder to score 5X5 bulls then any other.

I think you are right about guessing the score on a 5-point. it is harder but i will take a stab and say 307 give or take an 1/8th lol.

OK, My guess is he's a 345 bull minus his 5ths, so take away about.....hmmmm.....19 inches....makes him about 326, minus the 4th mass measurements......about another 14 1/2....so, 311 1/2 gross. Pretty close to that net. How far off am I?

I really have know idea but know he's a shooter! Aw, what the heck...320.

That bull is well under 300points!! I'd give him aprox. 270, you only get 3 circumfrence measurements being a 5-point! Good Bull nonetheless. Congrats--ElkNut1

315-320? And Yes you do get the last mass measurement. You measure it halfway between the 4th and the end. Just like on a three point deer, you measure the mass halfway between the 2 and the beam or the beam and the end of the 2. Am I right?

For anyone interested, when you get your elk mounted make sure the taxidermist doesn't tip the antlers forward so they will clear the wall. The elk pictured is sneaking with his head (nose) up and the antlers are tipped clear forward to clear the wall. Looks a little off when that is done.

Nice bull

2-point,

You are correct in saying that the ears are tiped forward on my bull. I know that this bull is not the widest bull out there. If you look real close you can see that the bull's antlers are wider then the bulls ears. In fact there is nearly 3 feet from the bulls ears to the wall. The reason why the bulls ears are tiped forward is because I asked the taxidermist to tip them forward. I personaly feel that it makes the bull look more alert and paying attention to what is going on.

Acouple of you are better at guessing scores then I thought, the rest of you just found out what I ment by saying its harder to score a good 5X5 then any other bull. The bull gross scores just under 310 and nets scors just over 300.

No he was not the biggets of the three he was the smallest of the three. The biggest was 6X7 that I figured would score well in to the 360's possibly 370's. I had a 40 yard broadside shot at him, but second guessed myself and used my 30 yard pin. Needless to say I still have nightmares about that day.

400, does that include a 4th mass measurement then?? I was off if it does, even though my final guess is close.
Also, the guy above said something about the antlers/skull cap being tipped forward so the antlers clear the wall, not the ears. I think the mount looks fine myself!

Nice one!

I was gonna say about 312, I have a 5x5 like him from unti 1 in az that scores 312 they are alot a like mines not as tall but he is wide. If I can get a pic us soon Ill post it

Where the heck did I get that 2-point was saying the ears were tiped forward. I guess I need to start reading the post alittle closer. Sorry 2_point if I came across a little harsh.

That does not include a mass measurement between the fourth point and the end of the main beam. If I remeber correctly that measerment would have added about 9 inches to the total score (4 1/2 per side) bringing the gross score to 319 and the net to 309 (give or take some).

Sweet, I am happy with my estimation then! Does anyone know if it is indeed correct to take that last measurement??

No worries 400. I did not mean that your bull looked odd either, just a comment on overall mounts. Glad to hear I hit the score, you had me worried with it grossing 10" under my guess. haha

In the case of only 4 normal points, B&C requires an H-4 measurement be taken halfway between the G-4 point and the antler tip.

D13er---Thanks for the clarification on the 5 point rack. That bumps my guess to 279!!! <grin> You learn something everyday!!

For that bull to score 300+ points, the average length of each tine would have to be aprox. 20". I can see his brows are less than 16", unless that picture is decieving. Can you tell us what his G-1-2-3-4 tines are and main beam lengths?? Width?? Thanks--ElkNut1

LAST EDITED ON Dec-12-04 AT 10:50PM (MST)[p]MB-50 maybe
G1-15
G2-15
G3-15+++
G4-15+++
H1-H4=28

------------------
138 x 2 = 276 + 36 spread =312 looks possible to me

I can go along with some of the score such as---

an average 15" on H-1-2-3-4= 60x2=120
G-1-2-3-4= 22x2= 44
Main Beam--45x2 90
Spread-----36 ------
Total-- 290

Regardless of score it's a beautiful 5-point, not to be passed by this bowhunter!! ElkNut1

Great bull no matter the score. Don't second guess yourself about not taking the other bull. It is better to take a sure shot on smaller animal, than make a bad shot on a big hog. Great bull and enjoy the great memories of the hunt.

Here are the measurements of the bull. You add them up and see what you come up with.
