Utahs best limited Elk Unit.

Ok Guys Gals and everyone else.
I am shy 1 point of having max points for elk. And it is near time to put in again. The answer I want to kill a monster. I have killed a lot of elk and hunted all over the state. The question which unit or CWMU is the best unit for not only drawing but it has to host a good chance at a 370 plus bull. And if u recomend a unit are u willing to help find the trophy of our lifetime? I don't recon I will have that many points again!! I want all the help I can get. I have taken severl buddies and harvested many a 350 and one 387 but i havent even seen but one or two 370 plus. And if it is a Cwmu. What are the conditions?

I hate to break it to you, but if your even 1 point shy of max - your probably still a long way from getting one of the premium tags. Unless you want to try one of the new late hunts - I bet they would be easier to draw. I spent a lot of time on the pahvant and SW desert this year - wow there are some big bulls runnin around! even with max points odds are tough on those 2 though....... to answer you question - I think all the units got a few 370s right now...some guy even shot a 409 up here on the cache this year - thats insane. If it were me, I think it would be a waste to put those points towards anything but the pahvant....even if you have damn near no shot at a tag.

MT. Dutton and Beaver units both have good odds to draw with one less then max points. You will have to work a little harder in some rugged terrain to find what you are looking for. I will have 12pts this draw also and still cannot convince myself to change units, but if I did it would be of those two.

I had the last AR301 tag and can tell you the quality is as good there on average with more bulls than anywhere else I have ever hunted. And had some GOOD tags in other states.

Arizona - 4 times
New Mexico
Colorado- TONS of times

Go with the what was recommended and don't wait.

elk ridge or the wasatch units are both very good. I took a 365+ bull off elk ridge and I had a friend shoot a 377 bull on the wasatch unit.

Le'me see if I have this correct, I recommend a unit holding a 370 or better bull, then must be willing to help you find it,
Must I similarly be willing to gut it & cape for you ?

If you're putting an offer on the table, to help you out, use my truck and gun, and even letting me pull the trigger, hell I'll even clean the damn thing!!!!

Seriously, I think lots of the units are holding 370+ bulls nowdays. Heck, we even pulled a 380+ bull off of the Fishlake with its MEGA_TAG allotment last year...who know's??

I would do the same for ya all. Even Bessy and Bfe. I have hunted the Manti for 20 + years and I have helped on Several limited draw tags. All took great bulls. But with that many points I wonder if I don't want to try Cwmu. Or one of the units that produce better bulls. Even though Manti,Fishlake and a few others are producing great bulls! They are few in the 370 class. I know this I just want a tag and a chance at a great bull. It is getting close to time to put in and I will let you all know where I put in for. I am hopeing for some info to put the frosting on what I already think I know. It is what I don't know I quest!! Maybe some one here does. Maybe Bobcat

Rut.... get the new Trophy Hunter mag. I got mine in fridays mail. It has a great read on trophy elk/deer put together by Rusty, who is a certified Official Scorer for Boone and Crokett Club and he wrote and maintains the Biggest Bucks ect. in Utah book. He has the best units for a 10 year period. This should really help narrow your choices down......... man I hope ya draw out!!! Sportsmans has them........

Couple ?? How does my post get clear back to page 9. I did check out the New issue of Trophy Hunter. Nice. With the new regs out? All the new late hunts, archery and muzz hunts. makes one wonder. Got to draw. and if 370 don't come along then oh well A meat bull would be good LoL. After all I have 2 offers to cook. After studding the draw odds. a couple units have pretty good odds say for archery or muzz. I wonder about the late hunt and the premiun hunt if it will lower the odds of the other hunts??

I am hoping that alot of applicants with lets say 5 points and under go for the late hunts and open up some better odds overall for the people who have been putting in the longest. If this happens it still might give those with lower points some good odds still which other wise they would not even be close to drawing in a lifetime. I would hate to waste my 8 points on a late hunt but you never know what this late hunt will do to the odds until we find out next year about this time. I know if I had 12 I would have to try for the premium hunts this year and just cross my fingers.

Warbird . Heck I reckon if ya had the bucks for a premium hunt the odds wont be as high as the early hunt even with 8 points. Just for the simple reason the cost. Same with the late hunt. That could be a good deal not to many hunters want to forfit the rut. And I bet the odds are not as high.

Hey rut.... while putting together my little research sheet, I noticed that there are 7-8 units that DON'T have a late hunt. So for figuring my best draw odds without all the crap-o-la of speculation on increased tag amounts and from the 30% gig............. I get a fairly set odds for any point pool. Thought ya might be interested in that little tid-bit in case ya haddn't noticed these units yourself.......

Sure 2-3 of them are no brainers for not having huge bulls but.....the others remaining..

Stay away from my San Juan-bow tag will ya!!!

I noticed on the Units with out the late season. Far as Archery San Juan. That is the one I was thinking of. NO not really it would be a good one. I am however thinking of one of the Cwmu's down there. I better hurry up and decide. I know this each year we loose a little. Either tags or one thing or another. Please dear can i go I just want a tag. Thanks
