Which hunt for rifle guys?

I am wondering which hunt may be the best bet for rifle guys.

My math says that for San Juan three percent of all tags equals 1 premium tag. The odds for drawing could be horrible and the hunt expensive, but it would definitely be the hunt of a lifetime.

The rut hunt will be the same great hunt only missing about 33% of the hunters as before, which is good. But, the problem is that the odds for the San Juan could easily go from 1 in 60 to 1 in 90. This would be similar for all units.

The late hunt likely will have better odds, perhaps as good or even better than archery and muzzleloader. However, The bulls are not congregated with the cows, they are spread far and wide in small groups. Some from the San Juan will be on CWMU's or private property and untouchable. Others could easily only be accessible via snowmobile on some years. A lot of bulls will be broken to some extent.

Maybe, I better get more confidence with the bow, at least I would have a long hunt with relatively few hunters and more daylight hours.

Let me know what I am missing guys. At least the DWR keeps it interesting for those of us still waiting to draw.

Hey 450,
Looks like you have pretty well summed it up. Higher odds on the Rifle hunt, tougher hunt on the late hunt, poor odds but awesome hunt on the premium hunts...
Just going to be a big crap shoot... It will be hard to figure out how the odds will change this first year...
Most units are holding big bulls now, so any rifle hunt should be a great hunt, but getting the permit is still going to be the tough part.
Good Luck...

A bad day hunting is better than a Good Day at Work!!
