I heard there is a trophy depredation hunt going on right now out on the anthro.. Anyone else know about this hunt? From what I have heard there were 15-to-20 tags given.. is this correct? I would appreciate any info anyone has.

Yes I know from a good source a guy was called by fish and game last Saturday and was told his he needed to drive to Vernal and pick up his tag and that he would not waste any bonus points if he harvested a 5 point bull or smaller and that he could put in for the up coming hunts again. On the other hand if he harvests a 6 point or larger he would lose his points and have a 5 year waiting period. I know what I would do go for a very large bull now and lose the points because it is so hard to draw even if you have max. What I want to know is why everyone did not have a chance at this like a drawing. I was told this guy had hunted for cows last year and they just called him this year to see if he wanted to hunt prblem bulls. What is wrong with taking cows out instead of bulls this time of year if they have a disgruntled landowner?Or call the guys who had max points last year and did not draw and let them have the tags first they are the ones who deserve the tags first. Why couldnt they hold off until next year when a late hunt will take place and only harvest cows this year?

5 point or less keep your points? 6 or bigger lose them?

You got to be kidding.

Shoot a bull on a LE lose them. Sounds like AR-301 rules to me.

No info here BT.

Ty, believe it or not...I heard a father/son both got tags.. the son is 16yrs old...how did that happen??? He couldnt have max points. I had alot of information come to me about this today...im trying to find out if this information is true or not.

BROWTINE,

This hunt that is taking place is true. I heard also that the hunt would have three different hunts with six hunters on each hunt with different seasons. I know for a fact the first hunt started tuesday and will close at dark today. It will be three hunts total for a number of 18 bulls being killed.Dont they have enough cows to harvest to take care of the problem that is my main concern.TAKE 18 TROPHY BULLS FROM THE UNIT AND WHAT DOES THAT DO TO A HERD FOR NEXT YEARS GENE POOL.

What LE unit?
Is it anthro for sure?
who's property is getting damaged.

The only deperdation bull tags approved by any RAC's are in the southeast region.
The people selected to hunt would have to be next to draw in regular draw process (all who put in are drawn. If 2000 people put in and there are 100 tags then the first person to draw dep.tag would be #101,102.103.ect...)

Someone find out who got to hunt these bulls get me names. I can find out if they were put in for the LE unit that they are killing these bulls in.

Call the ELK FOUNDATION to see what they can do!

The individual I know has never put in for the anthro unit on the regular draws. I am not blaming the guys who are hunting the unit right now for being called by fish and game because I think everyone would jump at the chance at either killing a monster 6 point or bigger bull and losing your bonus points or killing a very large 5x5 and still being able to put in the elk draw in 2005 and not losing any of your bonus points. I say they should change it like the way it is for the rest of us. Shoot a bull of any size on le units and lose all points plus have a 5 year waiting period.Dont this sound like the logical way to get more people out of the bonus point dillema to improve future chances at drawing for all of us.

GUYYYSSSSS,

This unit is far west of Vernal Ut. South of US40. Going towards Helper and Price.

The major reason for bulls being harvested and not cows is becuase the bull-to-cow ratio is way out of balance. IN FACT, all cow hunting has been stopped, just like the Fish Lake unit was 3-4 years ago. My buddy hunted Anthro this year. He saw only about 7 cows the whole hunt. Several bulls, but almost no cows. Fish and Game told my they were going to stop the cow harvesting this year.

YA

LETS HAMMER THEM COWS UNTIL THE BULL TO COW RATIO IS ####ED UP!!!

NOW LETS START KILLING BULLS IN DECEMBER & JANUARY!!!

DOES THIS REMIND YOU OF THE SAME THING THAT HAPPENED TO THE DEER HERD OR CAN ANYBODY SEE THE LIGHT???

I GUESS THEY JUST CAN'T SEE WHATS GOING ON???

OH,I FORGOT,I'M NOT A BIOLOGIST,JUST THOUGHT I'D THROW THAT IN BEFORE SOMEBODY REMINDS ME OF IT AGAIN!!!

LETS OVER HUNT THE AREA,LETS OVER HUNT THE COWS,LETS HUNT COWS FOR SEVERAL YEARS,LETS HUNT THEM CLEAR INTO JANUARY,LETS WAKE UP ONE DAY AND REALIZE THE HERD HAS BEEN SHOT TO #####,NOT ENOUGH COWS,EASY SOLUTION,LETS SHOOT THE ##### OUT OF THE BULLS NOW,THAT WILL GET THE BULL TO COW RATIO BACK IN PROPORTION!!!

THE ONLY AGGITATED bobcat!!!

The father and son put in together Father had Points, cow hunts are still going on,landowner promblems and the DWR inability to see past there nose is the reason for this hunt, the good part is a few hunters will get some benefit, the bad is the rest of the elk in this area will be taken out by DWR after first of the year. This WAS a great LEunit but will the help of our own DWR,and some others its history too bad.But we will have 25 sheep tags state wide next year hooray!!!!!!!!!!

Sorry guys, I'm going to Anthro also, just got the call this moringing. 6 guys a week, this it the 3rd week. As of date: only 1 rag bull, the rest have been mature bulls. 2 guys held out for huge bulls, and went home empty handed. However, they had opportunity to kill mature bulls.

Same rules as that late hunt they did in Sanpete county a few years ago. Your points will be taken away if you kill a 6 point bull. And you keep your points if you harvest a 5 point bull or smaller.

Wish me and my dad luck (we put in on Anthro together this year).

So are the people who are given the tags for this hunt the same who applied for the hunt this past year and were next in line to draw?

Yes,

They were the same people that put in for Anthro last year, and the did another drawing between the Archery, Rifle, and Muzzleloader.

I put if with my dad on Anthro Archery. They drew his name, and being we put in as a dual, we both get to go.

It's going to be somewhat tough. It is private land hunting. Most the landowner will let you hunt, however, I'll bet it's not a "walk in the woods".

I'll keep you all posted.

On the contrary...it is kind of a walk in the woods. Its mostly open country, and you can drive pretty close to these bulls. And what Grumpyoldman said is true. The elk that are not harvested by hunters will be taken out by the DWR. This use to be one of the premium places in the state to hunt in my opinion, but I live within 20 miles of this unit and haven't put in for it in years. The bull to cow ratio is way out of balance and they still have cow hunts every winter. I hate to see it come down to this. My thoughts is IF you partake in the hunt...you should lose your points....bull or no bull. Hunting is hunting....the DWR shouldn't make any guarantees.

LAST EDITED ON Jan-04-05 AT 11:11AM (MST)[p]Yes, I agree. I remember just reading somewhere on the DWR site that latest data shown had the Anthro as the oldest average age of bulls harvested out of the whole state. I guess they just can't stand a good thing. Good luck to the hunters and kill a monster.
