I shoot the Epek broadheads....a mechanical. What are you guys shooting? How many animals you harvested with them? Any trouble with any broadheads in your time?

Seen that head used on 1 hunt, 3 shots 2 failures, lost bull.

For myself, I use German Kenetics, pass through's, good blood, dead elk!

I've been shooting Wac'em for about 10 years now......lots of critters have fallen to them.

I like the looks of the VPA's as well.

Tried many through the years, but lhave stuck with G5 Strikers for fixed and NAP Spitfire Max mechanicals.
Want to try the new G5 Havocs this year.

G5 striker for me as well. Killed 4 whitetail and 1 bull elk with them, all one shot kills. Longest track job was probably 80 yards. Never had a problem with them.

Hate epek! Used them for about a week then learned why the 2 bucks I shot at ducked my arrow..... Because they whistled like a nerf football. Since then I have been shooting Grim reapers and love them never had one problem with them

Decided not to shoot the EPEK because of the whistle they make. I shoot the grim reaper razortip expandables. Have killed a few with them as have my friends, and have never had any issues with them.

LAST EDITED ON Jan-31-15 AT 02:34AM (MST)[p]I've seen every Brodhead known to man shot at Pigs. I Worked on a hunting ranch for pigs and sheep for five years. G5 montec broadheads are without fail the best fixed blade broadhead on the market. As far as expendables go, any type with a forward folding blade I have seen fail (grim reaper style). I use one type of broadhead. trophy Ridge meet seekers for A few reasons. One, out of a minimum of 50 animals I've seen shot with them , I have never seen them fail. Two. every animal I have shot with them has never gone more than 40 yards before dying. A bear I shot went 15 yards. Five elk I shot went less than 40 yards, two of which didn't go more than 10 yards. All 4 javelina I shot with them died within 20 yards. My deer this year went 15 to 20 yards. All shots were pass through shots except for one Elk where the Brodhead lodged in the hard round surface of the lower shoulder blade. 3 The blades are fully expanded before they even touch the animal. 4, they fly like a field tip.(I practiced with them out to 90 yards.)

G5 Montecs for the compound. STOS for the stickbow. Both shoot the best out of all the ones I've tried. I have to shoot at different spots on the block with the Montecs, because the first time I tried to shoot a group, I shot the nock off a field point arrow with a broadhead arrow at 30 yards. Next broadhead arrow hit one of the blades from the first arrow. That impressed me a lot. With the STOS, I shot at a target at 55 yards just goofing around, and the flight was straight as could be. No planning whatsoever.

I only shoot fixed broadheads (Slick Tricks). There's a reason why a lot of outfitters won't allow their clients to shoot mechanicals.

Shot the EPEK's for a few years. Suffered through the design changes but continued shooting them because they were local and they shot just like the field point. Killed a few critters too. Wasn't blown out of the water impressed but they worked. I finally gave up on them though. One of the toughest companies I ever did business with. I can see why they have gone out of business.

Thinking of trying the QAD broadheads this year.

I'm with Roy on this one, I've shot the wac-ems for years now. In a pinch the G5 strikers are very very similar both fly very well. I too have seen countless expandables shot at elk either fail completely and lost bull or take several arrows to get the job done. I strongly strongly encourage our clients NOT to shoot expandables at elk.

probably going to take a beating for this but I use the 2 blade rage.... Switched from the muzzy fixed blade had no luck with muzzy. The rage has worked for me ... my bull this year shot at 22 yards went 10 steps and fell over my whitetail buck down in 20 yards.... no right answer just what works for me....

Any guide or outfitter that told me I couldn't use a piece of equipment I have total confidence in be it a BH choice or other wouldn't be getting my business.

I shoot Killzone mechanicals, IMHO its best two blade rearward deploying design out there. Killed numerous animals with it and all had pass-through. Huge holes and deadly accurate. Also on two that didn't hit rocks I was able to re-sharpen the blades and reuse them. I shoot them on a 600 grain FMJ with heavy FOC.

I have shot a slew of critters with all types of broadheads and have come to the conclusion that good shot placement is much more important than the broadhead on the end of arrow...Sharp broadhead through lungs and/or heart equal dead critter, usually with good blood trail. That being said I like a fixed blade cut on contact head such as montec, stryker, vpa and other reputable heads for big thick skinned animals like elk and moose. I used 125 grain slick tricks on a Colorado bull elk last fall with excellent results. Muzzy and thunderheads have been on my arrows in past with good results. For deer sized animals I have used several types of mechanicals including grim reapers, t-3, tekan, havoc, and a few others all with satisfactory results IF shot placement is good.

A 2 bladed single beveled. I shoot the 125 anarchy at everything. Sharp edges and a broadhead that penetrates. Put it to the test against any of your three-four blades for penetration, I dare you and let's hear the results.

Shuttle T locks, have shot several deer, a turkey and an antelope, They fly very true for a fixed blade.

VPA 3 blades for me. 40-50 animals and nothing but complete satisfaction. All but a couple have been pass thrus. I like a 3 blade cut on contact, one piece, machined steel.

But above all else, it needs to be put in the right place. A broad head can't fix poor placement.

Many years ago I shot gold tip gladiator expandables and had mixed results. I hit 1 deer right behind the shoulder and never got a single drop of blood. Shot numerous elk and typically had pass throughs with good blood. Broadheads were discontinued.

Decided to go to a fixed blade head so I gave slick tricks a go. First season using them I Shot an elk broadside at 30 yards with pass through, shot was far back, I figured I got liver. Was able to sneak in on the elk and at 40 yards with a slight quartering away shot I hit the elk perfectly only problem was the broadhead didn't penetrate. The broadhead simply hit and deflected down the side cutting skin only. I was able to get back on the elk within 20 yards and the exact same thing happened, the broadhead deflected down the side of the elk slicing skin only.

Next I went to shuttle-t's, and have had decent results. Shot 5 elk and 1 deer, however, all shots within 30 yards, only 1 pass through and that was on the deer.

This year going to try QAD Exodus heads.

I shoot the G5 striker. I just sen to like fixed blades more than the mechanicals. Ive gotten a few deer with the striker and have had no problems what so ever. Never hunted anything bigger like elk or anything with them though.

I started using wac em 2 seasons ago. So far 1 deer. I really like them.

Currently and slowly changing the arsenal over from Stinger 4bl (of which my last seven elk have fallen to), to Buzzcuts. Though their new Black Hornet have sure caught my eye!

In the past have used: wasp camlocks, muzzy 3bl, vortex and simmons treeshark.

I've always used muzzy 4 blades and really liked how the performed. However, I shot my last elk with a G5 Tekan 2. He went down within 40 yards of the shot. I was shocked to see how fast it took him down. Not sure if it was the bigger cut diameter or if I just got lucky and hit him in the perfect spot.

I've shot many different broadheads over the years. I'm currently shooting the Wac em Triton XL 100 grain. They shoot very well, with great penetration.

Well I am surprised my broadhead hasn't been mentioned more. Love the Muzzy Phantom 3-blade 100 gr. IMHO can't trust mechanicals on Elk, as noted earlier ...shot placement overcomes defective broadhead design but hit the shoulder blade or a rib at the wrong angle and a strong fixed blade will get my vote over mechanicals every time

VPA 3 Blade. Cut on contact head that sharpens up EXTREMELY well. I shot G5 Montecs prior but wasn't able to get them as sharp as I'd like. I've also shot quite a few hogs and blacktails with the Rage 2 blade but wouldn't go after anything much larger with them.

I'm surprised I didn't see RamCats mentioned anywhere. Anyone shooting them? I got my deer with them 2 years ago. Massive blood trail, complete pass through. I love them.

I've shot the 4 blade Wac'ems and like them. I've also tried Hell Razors. I had some blades break on the Wac'ems when I hit an elk though The head never even touched bone. I'm leaning towards Montec's this year for my elk hunt. Shot placement and arrow flight is way more critical then they type of head used I've found. My brother shot a bull at 73 yards with a Grim Reaper and it left a big hole and lots of blood. Bull went 40 yards is all. Proper shot placement was the key.

Wac-ems, first year we hunted with them our group of 4 shot 4 bulls, we all got to watch them drop with in 50-75 yards, shot a lot of deer and a few pigs with them, never had a blade break. They shoot very much like my field points. I have a friend who shoots Rage, and I have seem them kill on some bad shots due to the wide cut, but I cant get any expandable blade to not catch on the foam in the quiver and in the brush if I am stalking in with one on the string, so I never feel comfortable using them

practice tips even whistle phillie.

I use Muzzy 125 gr 3 blade, have for 15 years. I have killed a lot of elk with these and the farthest one has went was 50 yards. Might be old technology, but if it aint broke....

I have shot 100 grain muzzy 4 blade for a lot of years. Recently switched to G5 CS montec's and really like them. They fly really well with my set up. Never had any issues with them.

THE ULMER EDGE I BELIEVE IS THE MOST THOUGHT OUT DESIGN MECH. HEAD AVAILABLE. I SHOOT THE 100 GR. EDGE, I NEVER LOOKED BACKED............YD.

I'm with yukondall, the ulmer edge heads are awesome I've only been shooting them for two years but I've killed a deer and an elk with them. Both blew all the way threw them. Neither made it more than 40 yards. They fly amazing I practice out to 90 yards and they fly exactly like my field points.

Another one here for Ramcats. They've always shot straight for me and the animals haven't traveled more than a couple feet so far. Haven't had much need for blood trailing since I've used them.

Switched from NAP crossfires to G5 Montecs a few years ago and haven't had a reason to change since, really good broadhead. Never shot mechanicals, no need to introduce another potential failure point with all that can go wrong archery hunting.

Have to use fixed broadheads in Idaho, but I haven't taken anything in this state yet. Most of the guys up here use Shuttle T-locks.

The wife and I used Swhacker mechanicals in Texas. I was using 100gr with my Mathews Ballistic and the wife was using 125gr with her crossbow. Both of us had problems with the blades deploying properly. I shot a hog and one of the blades didn't pop. Mrs. 11B shot a hog and neither of the blades popped, producing a nonlethal wound. I had to spend some time tracking that hog so I could put it down.

Emailed Swhacker about the problems that we had with the broadheads and never received a reply. Not impressed.

The old reliable 100 grain Muzzy.
If I could have a dollar for every hunter using mechanicals for elk and them failing I would be rich.

Ive shot Montecs for years and killed a pile of stuff with them. I've never had a reason to change, and thought if I did, I would switch to Magnus Stingers. I love the hurt they put on critters. That being said, I'm switching to Ramcats this year. Holy hell are they nice! Shoot great to 70 yards that I've been practicing. I've been shooting them into 1/2" plywood lately at 40 yds with ramcat, magnus, montec, rage, tekken, and slick trick...it's not even close. The rage was the worst, but my montecs were terrible as well. That ramcat is awesome! Slick trick was 2nd, but I love the ramcats cutting diameter. Take it for what it's worth, this is just what I've been noticing lately.

well, I've read all of the comments since I can't use my old standby on my new setup. I've taken 65 animals with the old Bear Razorhead and would like something new for my graphite arrows. I have used the Muzzy three blades and have taken a couple of animals with those. Now, I will check out the broadheads most often mentioned here and see if I find something that catches my interest.

I only use Grim Reaper spin tite. Ever since I started using them I have dropped 3 deer and 2 antelope in their tracks. The other deer and antelope have ran in a range of 5-30 yards.

The grim reaper makes a nasty channel. the blades have a curvature on the blade and they zip really good

Been shooting the Hartcraft, Deep Cuts. Love them. Tough fly good, and versitile.

I think expandables on Elk are a real risk.
I have watched 3 bulls shot with Rage, that all had very little penetration, sad!
My fixed heads shoot just as well as expandable, so why risk it?
Expandables cannot penetrate as well.
Wacem, Slick trick, and the old tried and true, in expensive Muzzy for me.

Hello bowhunt,
+1
I have been using 100 gr Slick Tricks since they were introduced. I have taken 3 elk with them and have had no problems.
I have used nothing but fixed blade broadheads for over 40 years now. I have never lost an animal due to the broadhead not performing as expected. I have lost a couple due to poor judgement on my part, but not one due to broadhead failure. However, I have personally helped several hunters track animals (elk in every case!) that were hit with expandables. All but one were never recovered. I have heard stories of many, many more!

I wonder why we don't hear too much from the elk guides out there???? We know several that read this forum on a regular basis?????
Seems to me that the folks that make their living guiding archery elk hunters would have the most experience on this subject!!

I'm putting the question out there to all the guides, , , ,
Based on your experience, which broadheads do YOU recommend?
