Archery during the early rifle hunt

Guys,

What are your thoughts about bowhunting during the early "any weapon" hunt? I have 11 points as a NR. There are a few units that offer 2 or more archery tags that I could likely draw.

But, there are more options for units that offer more than 1 tag when you look at the any weapons early hunt. Looking at last years draw odds, I could likely draw a couple units as well.

I haven't rifle hunted in over a decade, so the plan is archery. What are your thoughts of bowhunting these units when there are rifle hunters afield. The number of tags is so limited and I like the season dates better.

Feel free to email with suggestions. The units I am considering are Beaver, Boulder, Dutton primarily.

Thanks, [email protected]

you should have a great hunt its not like regular season... each unit has very few tags.. so I think archery equipment is the way to go.. especially after the first two days of the any weapon le tag starts. The rut should be in full swing.

You can still have plenty of good opportunity hunting the anyweapon with archtery gear. I drew my tag a couple years ago and called in several good bulls within 30 yards. The bull I did kill was a nice 20 yard shot. I was wishing I had taken him with my bow after the fact. I sure would not want to miss out on a 370+ bull that would not come close enough to take with a bow when I could have taken him with a rifle. The grouse hunters is what messed me up the first weekend. I did curse the DWR (under my breath) for opening that hunt the same day. So, when you draw the anyweapon tag hunt with your archery gear but pack your rifle with you just in case a GIANT bull decides to give YOU the shaft. If that is legal.

Remember you're still required to wear blaze orange during that hunt even if you're carrying a bow instead of a rifle.

As the others have said, I would recommend taking your bow and your rifle with you for an any weapon hunt. There wouldn't be any reason not to have a backup. If you did find that monster and couldn't get a bow shot you would still have options.

Utah requires blaze orange if there is a centerfire rifle hunt in progress. Everybody has their own opinion, but most who are serious about their any weapon hunt leave the orange in the truck anyway. I haven't heard of any citations issued during this hunt.
