Old man starting draw process, Utah, Wyoming, need help

Ok, maybe I am old and maybe not, I turned 50 this year, and I feel old. We have been putting in for NM and have taken a couple of good bulls, when we dont get drawn, we go to Colorado and get some raghorns.
I put in for Arizona last year and got a bonus point. But, at my age I am wondering if it is even worth it to even apply un Utah or Wyoming. I dont care about traveling that far for a junkhead, but a good bull would be nice. (I live in Tulsa) So, it looks like you have to have many years under your belt to get the points. My question is, is the draw in Utah a true preference point draw, in other words, do they pick the ones with points first and then go down the line, or is it like Oklahoma, where if you have 10 points, your name goes in the hat 10 times and so does the person with no points. They can still get drawn, but your chances are better.
And how long on an average does it take to get a good premium draw area? Suppose it takes 15 years, I will then be 65 years old. I guess somebody can carry me then.
Anyway, your input will be appreciated.
By the way, we hunt rifle seasons with horses.

Your questions can be answered at wildlife.utah.gov this will give you Utahs proclamation. You might want to try putting in for the new late elk hunts but make sure they will have tags available this year for non-residents on the unit you choose. In the non-resident column for elk if it shows a at least 1 permit will be issued and if it shows a b no non-resident permits will be issued for 2005. These new late rifle hunts will be 11/12-11/18. Someone always gets lucky without having points and draws a tag. It is not like Colorado where you need max to draw. As far as Wyoming and Utah go you had better make some decisions quik deadlines for both Utah and Wyoming will be Jan. 31 2005.

WY has no points, so you are at no disadvantage there. They say they will start points for next year's draw. a good time to get in. And Utah has only 1/2 maximum of its permits go to those with the most points. The other 1/2 goes like your state, with each point giving one more chance. If there is only one tag, it is in the second pool, giving everyone a chance. I have a buddy who drew a Utah limited entry elk with no points, following a Pansagunt deer tag the year before.

OK, so I guess my question now is, should I put in with a buddy of mine and my son, or should we put in as singles. Looks like if there is 1 or 2 NR tags on a unit, and we put in 3 people, it might kick us out of the drawing. Would it be better to put in as a single and the others tag along as helpers? or just hire a guide?

For nonresident limited entry in Utah, definitly have everyone apply seperately, for the reason you stated. In WY, apply as a party. They add enough tags for your party to draw out if you are the last one pulled.

email me if have any questions on some good units to put in for in Utah. For sure apply for the hunt, you wont draw if you dont put in.
Good luck!
