LAST EDITED ON Jan-10-05 AT 00:41AM (MST)[p]Only found 2 big bulls on the Anthro depredation hunt in the private land areas. An 8x7 and a 8X6. I took the 8X6, which scores 363 gross, not counting 6 inches of broken bone off his G-4's. I'll give up 5 bonus points for this bull. On the other hand, my dad made the mistake of shooting a 5x6, which the state considers a 6 point, and now he loses his 8 bonus points. We drew as a dual application. Happy hunting. Rob

How was the hunt? Walk in the park or regular hunt? Looks like you had some snow.

I used a 7mm STW. I was using fail-safe slugs, which I will never use again. They do not preform at close-range. They do not open at all. They go clean through without doing much damgae at all. I felt like I was shooting this elk with a .22cal. The thing would not go down. It was very disturbing to me. FAIL-SAFE bullets suck bigtime at close range. BEWARE!!!!!

Glad ya got a good one Rob~!

I had a similar experience with the older TBBs before they were redesigned on a close range shot at a doe--had intended to use my 150 grain partitions but had left 165 grain TBBs in my pocket for the '06--passthru's without expansion @ 20 yds. I did manage to get my meat deer down, but did some unnecessary meat damage in the process.

Did your buddy who got the Anthro auction tag get a good one too? Might have missed that post....

He shot a 340+ bull, he missed 2-380 B&C bulls, pass a 360 opening day, and then settled on a 348 bull last day. He could only hunt 5-6 days.

He is going to give it another shot this year, as he just made a deal with Mr. Tony Abbott for the purchase of another Anthro conservation permit. Tony is now accepting bid for who ever will pay him the most for the Mule Deer Foundation (UT Chapter) conservation permits. And if you didn't beat the high bid, he will call you back and let you know as so you can try to outbid the other guy. IT IS VERY CORRUPT!!!!!!!!!! What the Mule Deer Foundation(Tony Abbott) did this year in selling off more than half there permits to whom ever would pay them the most. Flipping PIMPS!!! is what they are.!!!

Sorry, but just talking about how Tony and the Mule Deer Foundation sold there Ut Conservation Permits this year makes me want to PUKE!!!!

NOW DO YOU BELIEVE ME ON THE 'JUNK' FAILSAFE SLUGS???

SEEN A 'COW KILLER' PUT 9 ROUNDS IN THE BROADSIDE BEFORE SHE WENT DOWN!!!

THIS HAS BEEN BROUGHT UP MANY A TIMES,FAILSAFE AMMO IS TOTAL TRASH!!!

TRY THE WINCHESTER POWER POINTS,YA THEY WILL RUIN A ROAST ONCE IN A WHILE,IT'S STILL BETTER THAN THE ANIMAL LIMPING OFF AND ROTTING!!!

TO ALL YOU FAILSAFE LOVERS,GO AHEAD AND KEEP WOUNDING ANIMALS,THIS bobcat WON'T TOLLERATE JUNK AMMO!!!

NICE BULL,HOW MANY FAILSAFES DID IT TAKE???

THE ONLY bobcat WONDERING WHY ANYBODY WOULD SHOOT FAILSAFES???

LAST EDITED ON Jan-12-05 AT 10:21PM (MST)[p]bobcat,

It took 6-7 rounds, and the sucker was still trying to get up. I't almost ruined me from wanting to hunt anymore. I was very sickend, by the VERY poor performance of the Failsafe ammo, not to mention I loaded them supper hot, 3300 FPS. Just imagine if they are already junk to begin with, add 200-300 fps faster, now your just like shooting a .22 through a piece of paper. I think I'm going to puke again just talking about it!!!

I have now done tones of research, talked to 2 dozen people and this is what I came up with:

Bear claws
Nosler partition
And the most highly recommended new stuff, noslers new ballistic tip "accu-bond".
I have heard that the new "accu-bond" solid lead core is the sh_t!!!

I don't know if Tony is a DWR fag, but I do know he is a retard Pimp!!!!

Snowman,

Where did your shots hit the bull? did you hit any bones? Just curious. Thanks

Give the new Fusions a try when they are available next year. They will either be a Speer or Federal bullet. My dad did tons of testing on them this year and seeing the results first hand I was super impressed, they outperformed lots of supposed great bullets in my eyes, and made a few look like absolute junk. I used them on my deer this year, great looking recovered slug.

You'll "give up" 5 points for that bull. YOu kinda make it sound like you are disappointed? That is a bull of a lifetime, even for a premium hunt. That bull is awesome, congrats on a pig!

Snowman,

I've been putting in for controlled hunts in Idaho for 7 years now and don't have anything to show for it so don't be disappointed in loosing your 5 points and killing a bull like that. I saw pictures of your dad?s bull in the email and it isn't a bad bull either.

I've shot 180 gr fail safe bullets out of my .300 win for 3 years now and have also heard numerous opinions from others. I've come to the conclusion that they do what they are designed to do, penetrate. When fail safes blow clean through an animal a lot of the energy from the bullet isn't absorbed by the animal. I've also decided not to buy any more fail safes and have also been looking at the accubonds. I hand load mine but haven't loaded them very hot (chronoed at about 2950 fps). I shot my last three deer with them and was pleased with the results on the two of the deer. Both those deer were about 150 yards away. The one that I shot at closer range (about 75 yards) was still on his feet after two hits to the shoulder and two shots in the ribs. He was dead before I could reload but I certainly wasn?t pleased with the results. Out of these three deer I was only able to recover one of the bullets and that was after it had busted up a lot of bone. That bullet expanded perfectly and retained practically all of its weight.

The way I look at it is if you double lung an elk or deer with a fail safe it is still going to die, it just takes longer than most of the bullets because the energy the bullet still has after leaving the animal is just wasted. If your looking for maximum penetration then fail safes aren't bad bullets but the amount of penetration they provide isn't really necessary for hunting deer and elk.

You said the bullets didn't open but did you recover any of the bullets from your elk? If so what do they look like? Do you have any pictures?

BrianID,

After reading you reply again, It looks like you have been getting my emails. SO, I will give you the same courtesy you have given me (NONE!!!)
