This is really continued from a prior post. I wanted to get input on how many tags/states people apply for.

Here is my response:

States: All Western states but CA
Species: All species but Antelope in only a couple
Total tags drawn for each year: 25+
Number of years drawing tags: 15+
Do you feel tag/drawings are out of hand for the normal working man? YES

Elk - Utah, CO, AZ, NM

Deer - Utah, NM, CO

Sheep - CO

All other Draws in NM

Just started putting in 4 years ago for out-of-state. Don't really plan on getting lucky for a few more years.

NM - home state - I have drew Elk - 7 out of 12 years -

- oryx drew my first year so its 1 out of 2

Have not drawn any other tags. By the way some of the elk tags have not been in the best units, 3 of those where in good units, 3 in fair units, 1 in poor unit.

I HUNT - THEREFOR I AM

all in MT, elk, deer, antelope, moose, sheep, goat, and turkey. drawn elk once and antelope 6 times. been putting in for 6 years.
Elk tag is a cow tag that is 1:8 odds. the tag is for a limited game range though and if you draw your cow tag, you get to hunt bucks on it, reason why the odds are so steep for a cow tag. shot a 144 inch whitey the one time i drew.
Deer tag is a doe tag that is about 1: 9. same instance as cow tag but earlier season.
moose is 1:25 odds and i should be getting close with 5 points now.
Sheep is impossible odds in Rock Creek, but someone has to draw it.
Goat is in Mission Mountain wilderness.

Wy, Mule deer, Elk, Antelope.
Ut, Elk, Bison, Bear.
Az, Elk, Mule deer.
Nv, Mule deer.
Co, Elk.
I try not to keep track of the money it takes to put in for hunts each year. It would be nice to get drawn for 1 good tag every year but that doesnt happen very often.

Utah: Elk, Deer, Desert Sheep
Colorado: Elk, Deer
Wyoming: Elk, Deer
Idaho: Deer

Tags drawn: Wyoming region G deer
Idaho unit 69 deer

UT - Elk, Goat
Just switched to elk from deer, sux I wasted a couple years on deer points. Bought nonres general deer licenses a couple times, wouldn't do it again if they were free.
WY - Sheep, Goat, Elk, Deer, Antelope, Bison
Drew Area 5 moose in 2002 and took a P&Y bull. Wolves are really knocking the population down in that region the last couple of years. I've elk and deer hunted all over the state since I live here.
NM - Oryx, Elk
AZ - Elk, Deer, Sheep
CO - Pts

UT - Elk, Sheep
WY - Deer, Elk, Moose
ID - Deer, Elk
CO - Deer, Elk
AZ - Deer, Elk, Sheep
NV - Deer, Elk, Goat
NM - Elk
MT - Deer

Purchase hunt licenses in Arizona, Nevada and Idaho about $400 per year. Yes, it is getting out of hand.

State: MT...why hunt anywhere else?
Species: Elk, Deer Enough to fill the freezer
No. of Tags: Elk 1, Deer 1-2, Depends on if I need a little extra meat in the freezer.

The cost of hunting out of state is rising due to many factors (USO). If I'm going to go for an out of state hunt I'll probably go to AK or Canada.

Calfornia-Deer, Antelope, Elk.
Nevada-Deer
Oregon-Deer, Antelope
Colorado-Deer
Wyoming-Deer
New Mexico-Elk

I hunt deer, elk, bear, here in Oregon

I wish to start applying for some Arizona and new mexico elk hunts but I have no idea where to get started. I know the units I wish to apply but the application process is really confusing.

WYOMING = ELK/DEER
UTAH = ELK/GENERAL DEER
ARIZONA = ELK
OREGON = ELK/DEER
NEVADA = DEER
CALIFORNIA = TULE ELK/DEER
COLORADO = DEER

MAY PURCHASE NEW MEXICO ELK TAG THIS YEAR

I caught the elk bug about six years ago, and started building points in Az & CO before I even went on my first hunt. Added Utah the next year. This year, I will apply for;

Wyo Elk & Moose(pt)
Utah Elk & Moose (pt)
Montana Elk & Deer combo
Colorado Elk (pt) & Deer (pt)
New Mexico Elk
California Elk (pt) & Deer (pt) & Deer OTC
Arizona Elk & Deer & Sheep
With 6 points in Az & Co, 5 in Utah and 2 (max) in Calif. I should draw a decent bull tag in the next few years. I mean I gotta get lucky sooner or later, right ?

NV-elk,deer,antelope,desert, rocky, and calif bighorn, and goat
ID-elk and deer

Once New Mexico- Missed out on muzzle but drew rifle last year
in the Pecos

Landowner tag last year in 6C next to the old Baca

Purchased land owner tags in New Mexico previous years

4 years over the counter Colorado

Montana- 1 for 1 on elk

Landowner tags are getting as high as an outfitted hunt especialy on some decent areas.

New Mex- Oryx,deer

Colo- Elk,Deer

Wyo- Deer,Antelope,Moose,Sheep

Ariz- Elk,Deer,Sheep

Some states I put in for points only. Yes the average person is being priced out.

Last year- drew a Nevada deer tag and won a raffle in Idaho
for Deer

WY: elk, antelope, sheep
NM: sheep, ibex
UT: elk, desert sheep
CO: elk (points), deer (points), sheep
MT: mtn. goat, sheep, moose
ID: moose
NV: deer, elk, rocky mtn. sheep, califoria sheep, goat
AZ: coues deer, desert sheep, elk, antelope
OR: sheep, deer (points), elk (points), antelope. Thinking about dropping Oregon from my list in 2005.

Been at this game for 13 years now. The past five years I have drawn a desert sheep tag in Nevada, moose in Wyoming, 1 deer in Wyo..2 in NV, antelope in Wyo and NV. Most years I only draw 1 tag.

With Cabela's T.A.G.S., Altimus' H.A.S., USO's service, Garth Carter's application service, and almost every other outfitter applying clients... western hunting permits will only get harder to draw. With all the big money from those listed above, it's easy to see how it's getting out of hand for the "average joe" hunter.

Still, there's nothing quite like finding out you've hit the big time when you draw that good tag you've been after! I wish evryone the best of luck in the 2005 draws!!!

archeryelkaholic.....are you telling us you draw over 25 different big game tags all over the western part of the states every year???

This post has opened my eyes. I never thought it possible to apply for so many hunts like some of you guys do. How do you guys scout, find time to get off work, etc. etc. Unbelievable is all I can say. I apply for hunts in my home state of AZ. But the rate hike scares me because I may have to move to Illinois for my job. Therefore I would become a nonresident. I'm looking at finding a different job here just becuase I don't want to lose my resident status!! Hunting comes first!

AZ: Elk, Deer, Antelope, Sheep

RockyMtnOyster

A, put in for a lot of tags and hope you don't draw more than one.
B, draw the tag first, scout later.
