LAST EDITED ON Jan-19-05 AT 03:04PM (MST)[p]I want to apply for a really good NM elk hunt. I want it to be one where I have little chance of drawing now, so probably a rifle hunt. Preferably one with lots of public land. What units should I be looking at? Thanks.

By the way you stated that it seems you want to have little chance now in return for better odds later? If so there are no points so applying now does not help in future draws.

Valle Vidal first rifle. 35 tags, once in a lifetime hunt, lots of game and good bulls. Poor draw odds.

Thanks Don. I realize there are no points in NM. Perhaps I should have phrased my question differently. I just wanted to know one of the best hunts I could apply for. My strategy is to apply for the best hunts in most wertern states. That way my odds are increased.

I was assuming I'd get Valle Vidal for a response. What about other units that might not be quite as tough, but are still quality? I guess it doesn't have to be a "once in a lifetime" draw. Maybe a "once in a decade" draw. Keep the ideas coming. Thanks.

If your'e looking for long draw odds there's plenty to go around. Look at the 16 units, any of the early hunts. Long draw odds but great hunts.

I figured you knew just wanted to be sure. 15's are also tough. 34 has some great hunting and is going to pnt restrictions so should get even better.

Valle Caldres is a seperate drawing $25 raffle, I think it is the best hunt in NM FYI

Agree with DonV about the Valle Caldera.

Unit 15 primitive weapon only. Archery / Muzzleloader.

Unit 16's - note some units are horseback only since it is composed on all wilderness land.

Unit 34 - Great area - large bulls.

Unit 4 Sergents - Large Bulls - Rifle Rut Hunt. Few tags. No other hunts ahead of you.

Now I need info on CO, AZ also UT deer.

Which units on the 16's are mostly wilderness which requires the use of horses? Do these units seem to hold some good bulls due to the lack of accessibility? or are they pounded just the same?

Thanks for the help.

LAST EDITED ON Jan-24-05 AT 08:25PM (MST)[p]BigPig-I don't recall a response. Was the idea anything you were interested in? Jim

I don't think so for this year as I am not 100% sure about 2005. My main goal is a really good bowhunt in my home state and I think I'll draw that this year. I will certainly keep you in mind for future hunts, thanks.

I am looking to try and draw for the Gila. What is you guys opinion on when to hunt? 1st of the season or the last week?

that would depend on the first or the second hunt. My suggestion is to hunt as much of it as you can. what weapon.
