Here we go again. Like every time I find a place hunt then they change things.

It has been an unlimited tags for bow, just make the application is all you had do. Now it is limited to 1000 tags, in the past there's been about 1300 people apply for those tags. As a nonresident I first have to draw a state tag then I apply for the limited draw. I just don't like this, but no one care what I like. Have take 3 bull over 320 out of their, last year took a bull that scored or over gross 381 6x7 here is a photo of the bull. Look i can't post the photo.

Bowedark,

which areas of the breaks are you talking about?? Are they all going to draw only?? Or are some staying as unlimited draw?? For some reason couldn't see your picture. Maybe it's just my browswer....

621 zone is what I was talking about. sorry about pictures was post on this site in October 20 2004 at that time I had someone else post for me.

Go to Montana FWP websight. Click on hunting and 2005 regulations. Some areas are draw now. Makes it real tough for NR since you have to buy that licence first, then see if you can draw. On the other hand some areas in central Mt have been a little crowded the last couple years. I wouldnt doubt if in the next few years they continue to decrease the amount of tags in breaks. 15 years ago, alot of those areas there werent any archery season for elk, and very limited rifle draw. Its a tough call, but sometimes its a sacrafice to maintain a quality area. And from you have taken in the last few uears, it seems to be just that (A quality area)

I went to the hearings regarding this issue and there was very little opposition from the bowhunting community. I thought that they would be a little more vocal regarding this but basically they said, "We don't want any limits but if the FWP does then okay".

What I can't understand is that they are talking about limiting bowhunting and at the same time upping rifle permits; Both either sex and cow permits. Doesn't seem to make much sense.

As an aside there will be zero winter kill this year as there is no snow to speak of out in the Breaks. We did have a cold spell but it wasn't anything that the elk couldn't handle.

I've heard complaints about that there too many hunter, once I got out of my truck I never saw anyone. So that means if there is a a 1000 tag only 100 goes to nonresident is this right?
This is going to get me hit me like Colorado did build up points to do a ranching wildlife hunt then the cut out the nonresidents. Try post the pictures of 2004 bull.

LAST EDITED ON Feb-05-05 AT 05:20PM (MST)[p]Is this a done deal for the Breaks tags? I try to keep up, but maybe I missed something. Bowedark, I got a bull, but not THE ONE. Jeff, I admire your dedication as far as attending the hearings. I don't have the time or the resources, but guys like you keep us informed. Thank You. mtmuley Maybe bow hunters aren't taking enough bulls? I don't know.

I feel for ya Bowedark! I sent ya a pm.

There are alot of other good spots to hunt in MT if you dont draw that breaks tag, just get the MT license first!

MTMuley,

I go to these hearing because I like to be informed about what is going on. This issue of bow hunters and crowding in the breaks is going to get worse. I don't want to limit anyone chances of hunting and enjoying this special area. I also don't want to see NR hunters pushed out of the picture either. Hunting is an important piece of our local economy and hunters bring a lot of $$$ into our town.

The challenge is that many of the bow hunters themselves are complaining to the FWP that there are way to many people out there to have a "quality" experience.

I looked at the tentative regs on line and saw for 621 it said,
"620-21....1000 permits....Apply or purchase by June 1"

SO what does that mean, its first come first serve or is that a typo? All the others that stated an "X" number of tags said "Apply by June 1".

Also, NE, do you know if a guy gets an unlimited archery permit for say, 700, will he be able to rifle hunt elsewhere in the state if he's unsuccessful with the "unlimited 700 archery tag"?

Thanks

HS,
I don't know if you will be able to rifle hunt elsewhere if unsuccessful.

I am attempting to understand the buy or apply thing for.

That was the "OLD" commision that voted against that. As anyone that had applied for a Montana Bison tag knows, we now have new members on our commision. (since early Jan) Who knows what changes have been made?

Relax Bowedark,

What you read is only the proposed changes. The FWP didn't pass this Regulation. What we should all be worried about is the Nature Conservancy is buying up all the good private ground and not letting people on.

NeMont, I understand the ecomomic impact of hunting in Montana and especially in your area. Do you think it is residents or non-residents doing the complaining about the hunt quality? I don't think non-residents should be forced out, but a local should have an edge. Arizona all over again? I hope not. mtmuley

LAST EDITED ON Feb-10-05 AT 08:06AM (MST)[p]MTMuley,

I agree with you that residents should get the bulk of the tags. I think a true 10% cap would be adequate. I have yet to draw a "premium" resident tag so I don't want to see NR hunters get on equal footing with me.

I don't know who complains the most about the quality. I know there is alot of griping.

Crex,

What areas has the NC closed to hunting? I have hunted on the Matador Ranch several times.

Nemont

I was just north of the UL Bend Refuge this year. There is a range that borders the CMR right there and the NC just purchased that place this past year and we were informed, by the gentleman taking care of the place, that there was no hunting allowed on the place.

I also found out that the ranch (formerly owned by a freind of my brother) we stayed at in the same area was sold to the NC. As far as I know for now that too is closed to hunting.

Ok I called the regional offices, said that the the bow tags would still be unlimited. So I got the answer I was looking for.

As far is to draw 10 percent normally goes to the nonresidents.

That a nonresident has a better chance drawing them than resident because there's more residence applying for those tags then nonresidents. Let's say there was 35 tags total, 4 of those tags would go to nonresidents and the remaining 31 would go to resident. With just over a 1000 residents apply for 31. and just less than 50 nonresidents applying for 4 it may be close but I believe a nonresident has a better chance.

I knew of a nonresident that drew a tag one-year and two years later another bull rifle now that is luck harvested 330 bull and 360 bull. Saw them both.
