A freind and I are wanting to come to New Mexico and hunt elk. We are unsure of which outfitter to use, there are so many. We would like to spend as little money as possible. We are open for any kind of lodging, camping, etc. But we sure could use a little help narrowing down our choice of outfitters.

what part of new mexico are you looking to hunt, and what caliber elk are you hopeing to get a oppertunity on. and what is the most you would be willing to spend.

I'd be happy to help you out or at least point you in the right direction. Shoot me a PM when you get a chance. Jim

Are you looking for huge elk, or high densities? Are you willing to wait to draw? Are you going to gun hunt?

Do it yourself hunts are very feasible and cheap, pretty easy to do a hunt for $1,000 DIY, add more for a landowner tag if you do not draw and want to hunt.

I come from OH, had only elk hunted once beforeand I am 2 for 2 on bulls with bow. I put a lot of work in but I also get to go every year since I do not use an outfitter.

That said I like JACO, and white cloud, never used them but communicated with them a lot in my research process.

Look at the web site. I guide for him in unit 2. His units down in 34 are great. I was a client a few years ago because I got it at the local MDF banquet.

Great camp, for a reasonable priced outfitted hunt it is hard to beat.

The different packages fit several people.

For a discription of the units and packages just shoot me an email. [email protected]

PS - I am always on the look out for a good duck hunting place.

I would contact Bremer Ranches. We hunted 1 year ago and our hunt was $1600/pp. Included was one guide per two hunters, lodging, 120 Gallons of Clean Water, and 20#'s propane and all food. No electricity and the beds were bunk style. It was clean and comfortable and it was about a 15 mile drive through the ranch to get to the cabin on the Eastern edge of the property. We were 300 yards from the National Forest Boundaries. Saw mule deer every day walk across the meadow 150 yards from the cabin to the creek to get water. Nothing big, but fun to watch. Most of the bucks were 18" - 20" 4x4's.

It was an early bow hunt with the fee being private land pass through rights. We hunted 90,000 acres of National Forest near Tierra Amarilla that was blocked on three sides by a huge ranch and the back side was a 500 foot rock face you would have to climb to get to our hunting area. We didn't see another hunter or even a sign of another hunter the whole time. We saw about 10 bulls - I got a 4x5. My hunting partner passed two 5x5's at 20 - 30 yards because they were hunting 2 - 310 - 320 Class 6x6's.

PM me if interested and we can talk off line and I will give you the contact information.

I don't know how to be PM you but I would definitely be interested in this as well because I want to go on my first elk hunt this year. I was going to apply for the Gila but like the sounds and chances of this better. Any info appreciated

Duckhunter931,

I have guided professionally in New Mexico for 7 years. My brother (who has guided here for over 30 years) and myself have partnered up and started Red Top Mountain Outfitters. Please email me at [email protected] and I am sure we can make it affordable for you to come hunt elk in northern New Mexico.
